Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) represents an ongoing effort to improve in a step by step fashion. CQI involves the application of constant evaluation with the intent of improving efficiency, effectiveness and flexibility. CQI emphasizes incremental continuous steps rather than big changes and requires a commitment to reflection. Through CQI initiatives organizations are able to identify, reduce and eliminate the suboptimal and find better alternatives.
The four key elements of CQI are: problem solving, interpersonal skills, teamwork and a quality improvement process. Although we often strive for improvement, the endeavour of CQI requires asystematic approach utilizing a quality improvement process for consistency. One of the most commonly used CQI processes is the PDSA-Plan Study Do Act (alternatively called PDCA-Plan Do Check Act). PDSA’s provide a model for the isolation, testing, evaluation and modification meant to help deliver immediate and noticeable improvement.
One of the most attractive features of CQI is that it requires the involvement of ALL members of the institutional workforce. Michener staff, faculty and students are continually encouraged to take ownership and seek ways of improving their performance and the products, services and processes they provide. Michener’s commitment to CQI is evident in the Integrated Academic Strategy (2010-2014) as quality represents one of the strategies meant to ensure the strategic intent “Best Experience, Best Education” for students with the vision of being a “centre of excellence for the advancement of applied health science education.” To that end, Michener utilizes the Excellence Canada Progressive Excellence Programme for continuous improvement.
The Applied Educational Research (AER) division at Michener is committed to helping staff, faculty and students with their CQI endeavours. Through consultation, we can help individuals understand the systematic process, develop inquiry questions, plan out initiatives and evaluate their results.
