Genetics Technology Curriculum

Semester 1 – Fall

CGGE112 – Cytogenetics Theory & Techniques I

This course will provide the foundational theory and hands-on experience of laboratory techniques currently used in diagnostic Cytogenetics laboratories. The student will acquire the knowledge, skills and techniques required to process cytogenetics specimens from receipt to chromosome analysis and interpretation. The course is comprised of Laboratory, Tutorial and Lecture components.

MTGE111 – Molecular Genetics Theory & Techniques I

This course will provide the foundational theory and hands-on experience of basic molecular laboratory techniques currently used in molecular diagnostic laboratories. The student will acquire the knowledge, skills and techniques required to process specimens for molecular testing. Molecular technique, analysis, interpretation and troubleshooting of results will be stressed. The course is comprised of Laboratory, Tutorial, Lecture and Online components.

Semester 2 – Winter

CGGE121 – Cytogenetics Theory & Techniques II

This course will provide a continuation of the theory and hands-on experience of laboratory techniques currently used in diagnostic Cytogenetics laboratories. The student will further apply the knowledge, skills and techniques required to process bloods, amniotic fluid and solid tissue specimens from receipt to chromosome analysis.

MTGE122 – Molecular Genetics Theory & Techniques II

This course will provide a continuation of the theory and hands-on experience of molecular laboratory techniques currently used in molecular diagnostic laboratories. Molecular technique, analysis, interpretation and troubleshooting of test results will be stressed.

BAIP125 – Foundations of Interprofessional Collaboration for Medical Laboratory Technology Programs

Interprofessional practice has become a preferred mode of team-based practice in health care internationally. This is an online course for Diagnostic Cytology, Genetics Technology and Medical Laboratory Science students to build knowledge of interprofessional practice and collaboration. The first step towards interprofessional practice is a solid foundation of your professional role including expectations with respect to legislation, standards of practice, codes of ethics, consent, confidentiality/privacy etc. These foundational pieces will be developed throughout this course with an eye to meeting and exceeding the required provincial and national competencies surrounding professional responsibilities. Building on this foundation, the course will further introduce students to the concepts and support for interprofessional collaboration and education as well as reflective practice, effective communication, teamwork and conflict management. Each of these components is an essential skill in interprofessional practice. Students will engage in self-directed weekly learning activities, participate in seven online discussions and attend three face-to-face on site workshops during this course.

Semester 3 – Summer

CLGE133 – Simulated Clinical Education

This is a 12 week Simulated Clinical course containing 2 weeks of Michener-wide interprofessional modules on ‘Quality and “Working with Seniors’ and a 10 week Genetics simulated clinical placement taking place at The Michener Institute.

During the 10 week Genetics Simulation, students will complete a 5 week rotation in the molecular genetics simulated laboratory and a 5 week rotation in the cytogenetics simulated laboratory. Through shared responsibility between the Faculty and the Student, the student will complete the required simulated competencies under gradually diminishing support and supervision. Successful completion of all simulated clinical competencies is required for entrance into hospital clinical.

During the first of the two rotations, students will be given the opportunity to attend the Great Lakes Cytogenomics Conference. This will allow students to learn about current issues and trends in the profession and also to interact with laboratory personnel in a professional but informal environment.

Semester 4 – Fall

CLGE242 – Hospital Clinical Education

This is an 18 week clinical placement, taking place at one or more sites affiliated with The Michener Institute. Students will complete competencies in both cytogenetics and molecular genetics in a clinical setting. Through shared responsibility between the Clinical Coordinator/Clinical Educator(s) and the Student, the Student will complete the required hospital competencies under gradually diminishing support and supervision. Hospital clinical will provide students with the opportunity to work in a clinical laboratory setting and collaborate with other health care professionals.
