Medical Laboratory Technologist-Genetics

• Performs, analyses and reports on various laboratory tests
• Performs routine and preventive maintenance of equipment
• Extracts DNA from human blood and tissue samples using Universal precautions and following established methods in our lab
• Maintains stringent pre and post -PCR containment procedures at all times to prevent PCR contamination
• Identifies technical and quality problems and takes appropriate action
• Participates in lab quality audits, and annual review and updating of standard operating procedures
• Works safely, following lab safety SOPs and safety requirements at all times
• Participates in sample accessioning and reporting as required
• Performs reverse-transcriptase PCR analysis as required
• Performs and interprets polymorphic marker analysis as required
• Participates in research and development projects as required, including Next Generation sequencing and the development of new assays for additional genes


This role may be for you if your career background includes:

• Registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) in the specialty of Molecular Genetics (new graduates with registration pending will be accepted)
• Experience in clinical genetic testing preferred
• Are able to identify and name mutations accurately, using standard nomenclature
• Are able to recognize unusual or abnormal results and to initiate appropriate action
• Are able to recognize and trouble shoot problems in molecular assays and in instrument performance
• Are able to optimize and assist in development of new assays
• Are accurate and precise in performing laboratory procedures
• Have excellent documentation practices
• Demonstrate attention to detail and emphasize safety/precaution in work practices
• Communicate effectively in written and oral English
• Provide good customer service
• Maintain strict standards of patient privacy and confidentiality
• Work well independently and as a member of a team
• Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
• Have experience with laboratory information systems
