Michener’s Fundamentals of Health Care program offers learners a self-paced, flexible and fully customizable program to explore and prepare for careers across the health care spectrum. Whether graduates intend to work in health care setting or enroll in further health education, this program provides pathways to a multitude of possibilities.

How do I apply for the September intake?
Applications open on January 23, 2023 in Ontario Colleges (OCAS).
What is the application deadline for Fall 2023 Foundations of Health Care intake?
Applications close on May 31, 2023.
Do I need to apply if I have applied for other Michener programs this year?
Yes, you must submit an application on OCAS. If you have an active application for Fall 2023, you can simply add Fundamentals of Health Care in your program choices at OCAS.
What are the admission requirements?
Minimum Educational Requirement:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent
Prerequisite Requirements:
- Grade 12 compulsory English C or U level or equivalent
- Grade 11 or 12 Mathematics C or U or equivalent
- Grade 12 Biology C or U or equivalent
Internationally educated candidates are required to meet Michener’s English Language prerequisite requirements. For more information, please visit the Internationally Educated Applicants webpage.
What supporting documents are required?
The following documents must be submitted by May 31, 2023 to OCAS.

I have applied to other Michener programs. Do I need to resubmit my documents?
If you have applied for Fall 2023 or Fall 2022 intakes and have submitted your high school transcripts, you do not need to resubmit documents.
When will I hear a decision on my application?
Offers of admission will be issued by the end of June to first week of July 2023.
What is the deadline to accept my offer of admission and to pay my fees?
Offers of admission typically expire within 2 weeks from the date of offer. To confirm your acceptance, you will be required to pay a $500 (Subject to change) non-refundable deposit, which will be applied towards your 1st term fees. The remainder of your tuition fee balance will be due by August 2023.
Finances/Financial Aid
What will the program cost?
The program fees will be assessed on a per course credit basis. The estimated course fee per credit is $600. Note that there will be associated student/incidental fees in addition to the course fees.
Can I apply for OSAP for this program?
At the time being, the program is not OSAP eligible. However, the program is currently seeking approval for OSAP funding.
Program Delivery
How long is the program?
The program consists of 20 courses taken over 4 semesters. Semesters of the program are offered in the fall and winter (there is no spring/summer semester).
Is the program being delivered online or in-person? Is it asynchronous or synchronous?
The program will be delivered primarily online with the exception of the observership course. Course will be delivered using a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning.
How many hours is the program? Can I work full-time at the same time?
The program consists of 20 courses that consist of 52 hours each. Course are delivered over a 13-week semester with 4 hours per week per course. These 4 hours can consist of synchronous lecture, tutorials or independent course work.
How many courses will I take if I am full-time?
A student taking 5 courses per semester will be considered a full time student.
Can I do this program part-time? What is the minimum number of courses I can take? Can I take only one course (and receive OSAP for it)?
Students can opt to take the program on a part time basis. There is no minimum number of courses required to be considered part time. (e.g. 1 – 4 courses per semester is considered part time).
OSAP approval is pending and is subject to the Ministry’s approval. Students offered admission to the program will receive further information about OSAP eligibility between July to August 2023.
If I were to take the program part-time, is there a maximum timeframe when I need to complete all required courses and meet the graduation requirements?
There is no maximum time frame for completion of the program. Students have the flexibility to complete the program at their own pace.
Will all courses be available each semester? Can I take my desired course at any given term?
All courses will not be offered in all semesters. Courses will be available in either the fall or winter semesters. Specific course offerings will be provided by April 2023
Are apprenticeships available?
Several apprenticeship agreements are currently in development. These will offer learners the opportunity to work in the health care field while studying in the program.
Can you tell me more about the observership component of the program? Can I choose where I will do the observership?
The observership is your opportunity to learn more about different careers in health care. Michener is partnering with University Health Network (UHN) to offer observerships in various roles. These observerships are to be confirmed.
An observership, like any other course, would require registration, payment of tuition and ancillary fees, prerequisite courses required for registration, etc.
Employment is not guaranteed from these observership courses, however, it a great opportunity to learn more about various careers in health care and to make connections within UHN.
There are limited spots available for observerships. The observership course will be offered in both the fall and winter semesters in order to maximize the number of opportunities. The observership and currently are only offered at UHN.
What will the class size be for September?
There will be 20 seats for September 2023. This may increase based on number of applications.

How is this program different from Pre-Health Science pathway college programs? Why should I enrol in this program over another Pre-Health Science program instead?
This program prepares students to work in existing and new roles at an entry level in the health care system. The courses focused on providing the knowledge and competencies to be successful in the workplace upon graduation. Pre-health programs are focused on giving students the prerequisite courses required for admission to other health programs.
- The program is highly flexible and delivered primarily online (exception of observership courses).
- The program consists of 20 courses, 8 of which are required.
- You can build the program to suit you – flexibility in course choice and sequence.
- All courses are same length and same number of hours enhancing the flexibility of the program.
- The program can be completed either full-time or part-time.
- The observership course allows students to experience working in health care, discover new health care roles and make connections.
Does this program guarantee my admission into the: CH, CV, CY, DH, GE, ML, RS or US programs? What about AA or MRI?
This program DOES NOT guarantee admissions to other Michener programs. Applicants interested in other Michener full-time or part-time base programs would still need to satisfy the entry requirements listed on the Admission Requirements page and will be ranked against other candidates.
My undergraduate CGPA is low (below 2.70/3.0), can I upgrade my CGPA using this program? Do I have to complete the 2 years to upgrade? Can I upgrade with a couple of courses to improve my CGPA?
This is not the intent of this program so at this time the answer is no. This program does not contain most of the courses that are required for entry into other programs.
Is this program recognized or accepted by schools other than Michener (For example: Med schools, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Etc.)?
This program is focused on providing foundational knowledge that is required to work in the health care system in entry level positions. This is not the intent of this program so at this time the answer is no. This program does not contain most of the courses that are required for entry into other programs.
I am an internationally educated health care practitioner (IEHP), why should I consider this program? What are the benefits of me joining this class? Are jobs guaranteed following completion of the program?
The Fundamentals of Health Care program would be a great opportunity to build your knowledge about the health care field in Canada.
Employment is not guaranteed, however, observership courses would be a great opportunity to learn more about existing and newly emerging roles in health care and to make connections within UHN.
Courses can also be used for prerequisite fulfilment if you plan to apply for other full-time Michener programs in the future.
I have recently immigrated to Canada. Will I be eligible to apply? If so, how will this program help me in starting my career in healthcare in Canada?
Unfortunately, for Fall 2023, Michener is unable to accept international students. However, if you hold Permanent Residence or Canadian Citizenship – then you can certainly apply for admission. International admissions have not yet been determined for future intakes. Please monitor the website for updates.
As an internationally educated applicant, you must meet the minimum educational requirements.
A WES or ICAS evaluation is strongly encouraged, however, is not a requirement for admission.
You must meet the Michener English Language requirement to be considered eligible for admission.
I am considering to switch careers and explore healthcare as one of my options. How will this program help me transition into healthcare profession?

I am internationally educated health care practitioner (IEHP) with extensive work experience. Can I apply for exemptions using my previous work experience and education? If so, how can I apply for it?
We know that skills and competencies can be learned through education (formal and informal), employment and other life experiences. Prior Learning Assessment and recognition (PLAR) is available to enrolled students only. Details on the PLAR process will be provided to students upon enrolment.
