Learner Outcomes

This course is intended to provide basic information about COPD and how it affects day to day life.  The course will also provide direction to support workers so they can identify worsening symptoms of COPD and determine when to get medical help.

  1. Describe the effect of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on the individual
  2. Describe the causes of COPD
  3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of worsening COPD
  4. Recognize ways to help manage the symptoms of COPD
  5. Reinforce breathing techniques
  6. Take action when flare up occurs
  7. Demonstrate effective communication using SBAR
  8. Recognize nicotine withdrawal symptoms
  9. Explain the need for oxygen therapy
  10. Describe safe oxygen use
  11. Recognize the autonomy of clients at all stages of life
  12. Report the presence of pain or breathlessness related to end of life.
