Duties
As an integral member of the perioperative team, the anaesthesia assistant (AA) is a specially trained RT who
participates in the care of the patient during general, regional, local or neurolept anaesthesia. In addition to providing
technical support to the anaesthetist for complex anaesthesia equipment, the AA administers anaesthetic and
medications, and performs specific technical activities (IV’s /arterial lines/airway maneuvers). The AA provides
constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anaesthesia using medical directives as applicable.
An AA’s skills are required primarily within pre-operative care areas, Labour and Delivery suite, endoscopy unit,
surgical suite and post-operative care units, but also within clinical diagnostic areas where procedures using
anaesthesia are performed. The AA is also an integral member of the allied health team to which there are
accountabilities for professional practice, education and research. The AA works within an Anaesthesia Care Team
Model (ACT) and liaises with other members to facilitate patient access to care through optimization preparation and
supporting anaesthesia process efficiency.

This internship opportunity is available for any Respiratory Therapist currently working at Quinte Health Care who meets the current AA posting requirements (with the exception of the completed AA education).
QHC will provide reimbursement for tuition and resident costs upon successful completion of each semesters requirements. Minimum 2 year post completion commitment to QHC AA position will be expected for successful candidate

Intern will work within an evolving scope of practice within the Surgical Program throughout the program.

Program Length: 3 Semesters across 1 years (Part-time)
Semester 1: 14 weeks (13 weeks + 5-day residential)
Semester 2: 16 weeks (14 weeks + two 5-day residential)
Semester 3 (Clinical): minimum of 12 weeks (approximate, including an elective rotation external to the assigned base site)

The responsibilities of the AA are perioperative/anaesthesia program-specific and can include, but not be limited to, daily clinical management/support for a defined group of patients and collaboration with the interprofessional team to promote quality patient care and safety. The location of practice may include a variety of perioperative and post anaesthesia care units at QHC ie. Ophthalmology OR, Endoscopy Unit, Main ORs, PACUs, Labor & Delivery Q7.
Requirements
• Current certificate of registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO),
• Certification in BCLS. ACLS/PALS and NRP preferred,
• Baseline eye examination for working in area of laser surgery,
• Compliance with the National Dosimetry Registration process,
• Enrolment in Michener Institute Anaesthesia Assistant Program for September 2023 start, and
• Previous experience of 2 years of critical care or operating room in the past 4 years.
