Duties
Position Summary:
The Nuclear Medicine Charge Technologist is responsible for assisting in the planning, organization, coordination and control for all work within the modality of Nuclear Medicine (NM). Reporting to the Director of Diagnostic Imaging, Cardio Respiratory and Sleep Lab, the Charge Technologist is responsible for staff scheduling, and ensuring that all work meets accuracy and reliability standards and requirements. The Charge Technologist is involved in departmental budgeting.
The Charge Technologist- is a specially trained healthcare professional that works under indirect Radiologist supervision and performs multidisciplinary skills for the purpose of diagnostic imaging of disease. Nuclear Medicine involves the use of low-level radioactive substances which are injected, swallowed or inhaled to produce diagnostic images of how the body functions.
The Charge Technologist uses expert knowledge of imaging, gamma cameras and radiopharmacology, together with an extensive understanding of the principles of anatomy, physiology and pathology, image acquisition, treatment and radiation protection to deliver quality care to their patients. The Charge Technologist ensures the care provided is safe, appropriate, tailored, timely, and maximizes the potential of the available equipment and resources.
The Charge Technologist is also the department’s designated Radiation Safety officer (RSO) as required by Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The Charge Technologist is responsible for all the maintenance of all QA standards, CNSC licensing requirements and liaising with CNSC to maintain high quality imaging techniques and compliance.
As the RSO, the Charge Technologist is responsible for educational requirements of staff as applicable which includes but is not limited to the creation, maintenance and compliance of LMS courses related to patient and staff safety in the DI department and where radiation is used, not limited to nuclear medicine.
The Charge Technologist is responsible for the management of thermoluminescent dosimeters in the hospital.
Requirements
Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:
• Current registration with the Certified Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) with a Medical Radiation Technologist designation (Nuclear Medicine Specialty)
• Minimum 5 years’ clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine
• Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) certification
• Transportation of Dangerous Goods training/certificate
• Advanced training in computed tomography (CT) and/or SPECT/CT
• ECG machine/monitors interpretation experience
• Proficient in IV set-up utilizing aseptic technique for injection of Radiopharmaceuticals
• Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and conflict management skills
• Demonstrated commitment to best practice, standards of practice, and life-long learning
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
• Competent with MS Office Suite, Scheduling software (preferably Kronos), and DI related software (HIS/RIS/PACS)
• Applied, clinical and methodology knowledge of non-vendor specific NM systems
• Proficient in IV set-up utilizing aseptic technique for injection of Radiopharmaceuticals
• Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
