Duties

If you’re a quality-focused Medical Laboratory Technologist or equally qualified professional with experience in preparing tissue specimens for analysis, consider this permanent, full-time opportunity with the Animal Health Laboratory at the University of Guelph.

Conforming to the Laboratory Services Division quality system, you’ll prepare histological specimens in support of anatomic pathology. Working within a team environment in a high-volume lab, you’ll receive, record and prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination, following specialized techniques and meeting special staining requirements (including immunohistochemistry) through the processing of tissues.

Your key responsibilities as a Laboratory Technician – Histotechnology will also include:
• embedding tissues in paraffin, cutting sections, and staining slides;
• maintaining stock of tissue controls;
• maintaining quality control by investigating and correcting unsatisfactory test results;
• preparing reagents used in routine and special techniques;
• assisting with method development projects;
• filing and retrieving slides and blocks;
• preparing summaries and special reports;
• providing technical guidance and instruction to colleagues, students and staff;
• maintaining adequate inventory supplies;
• investigating and resolving client service issues; and
• maintaining laboratory cleanliness and safety.

This position involves working 35 hours per week, from Monday to Friday and/or from Tuesday to Saturday, with a start time varying between 7:00 am and 9:00 am, on a scheduled rotational basis.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

To assume the role of Laboratory Technician, Histotechnology, you must have:

 A 3-year community college diploma in Medical Laboratory Technologist or equivalent, plus one (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 Demonstrated working knowledge of slide sectioning and stains, and laboratory supplies and chemicals.
 Proven efficiency in cutting and embedding tissues in a high-volume lab, working under tight deadlines.
 Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills combined with demonstrated teamwork strengths.
 Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, client-focused, team environment.
 Good understanding of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, WHMIS and Biosafety.
