Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR ) Genomics is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) to join our team of licensed professionals in our CAP/IQMH accredited, ISO15189 compliant program. Your laboratory expertise in clinical genomics will assist in the discovery of actionable variants that impact patient care in provincial and national investigative trials conducted in Canada and through the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope Cancer Centre Network. We collaborate extensively with medical geneticists, oncologists, pathologists and informaticians to accelerate innovation and clinical discovery.

Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR ) Genomics is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) to join our team of licensed professionals in our CAP/IQMH accredited, ISO15189 compliant program. Your laboratory expertise in clinical genomics will assist in the discovery of actionable variants that impact patient care in provincial and national investigative trials conducted in Canada and through the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope Cancer Centre Network. We collaborate extensively with medical geneticists, oncologists, pathologists and informaticians to accelerate innovation and clinical discovery.

The MaRS Centre has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy in place that requires proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a medical exemption issued pursuant to the Government of Ontario guidelines. Accordingly, as a condition of employment, new employees who are required to work on-site are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 subject to the duty to accommodate on the basis of protected grounds pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Fully vaccinated is defined as having received all of the required doses of a Health Canada approved vaccine and having received the final dose at least 14 days before your employment start date.

As described above, the requirement to be fully vaccinated is subject to the Ontario Human Rights Code. If the candidate is unable to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for a reason protected by the Code, requests for accommodation from the vaccine policy will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform standard operating procedures (SOPs) for NGS assays such as whole genomes, transcriptomes, and others;
Perform or support sequencing procedures on Illumina platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq and/or NovaSeq);
Independently monitor quality control metrics at various stages of processing, maintain/utilize QC databases and portals, perform QC sign-off duties, and escalate problems as required;
Develop and enhance working knowledge of molecular biology techniques as applied to clinical genomics and/or genomic interpretation platforms;
Maintain digital documentation (LIMS entries, wiki entries, JIRA tickets, etc.) in a timely manner to facilitate team-based processes ;
Comply with OICR’s Quality Management System documentation processes;
Participate in continuous improvement activities across all aspects of the NGS laboratories, initiating improvements as appropriate;
Support translation of NGS SOPs to automated platforms, as required;
Support Lab Lead, Clinical Sequencing and Manager, Sequencing Production to adapt to shifting project prioritizations;
Communicate effectively within the OICR Genomics Department;
Perform routine lab duties such as equipment maintenance and inventory management.

Requirements

A Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) licensed or eligible to be licensed by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO);
Post-secondary degree/diploma with significant coursework in molecular genetics, cancer biology, biotechnology, or related fields;
Minimum 1 year of demonstrated hands-on experience in a molecular biology laboratory is required;
Previous experience in an NGS laboratory is an asset, but not required.
