Sonographer – Ultrasound Technologist

MSF operates out of a main downtown location in Toronto as well as through 3 satellite clinics in North York, Vaughan, and Mississauga. Performs transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound procedures for fertility patients including early obstetric ultrasounds, sonohystograms, follicular measurements, antral follicle counts, baseline uterine cavity assessments and provides assistance during embryo transfers.
•Utilizes technical/medical judgment/knowledge to provide ultrasound-imaging study, evaluates image quality and modifies techniques based on on-going interpretation of anatomy and pathology on real time examinations.
•Assesses the patient’s condition prior to, during and after procedures; maintains awareness of procedural complications and reactions during and after procedures; recognizes the conditions requiring immediate attention and initiates appropriate response; documents procedures to ensure precise and accurate procedural records are maintained
•Evaluates and interprets patient’s clinical history, signs, symptoms, lab results and preparation prior to performing the exam
• Maintains responsibility and accountability for the manipulation of image data for storage.
• Ensures procedures are completed accurately and in accordance with departmental standards
• Performs Quality Assurance and Control, as set by department standards
• Provides technical assistance and guidance to staff, students, residents, and fellows, as required.
Participates in teaching, educational, research, safety and quality improvement programs/activities.
•Participates in the departments teaching and quality improvement programs, including: assisting with the training and evaluation of medical imaging students, residents and other hospital personnel, as required; assists the clinical instructor in completing student evaluations to ensure syllabus requirements are met
•Maintains responsibility and accountability for the orientation and training of new technologists
•Maintains current knowledge of medical imaging procedures by attending continuing education courses
•Assists, instructs and educates patients prior to, during and after procedures
•Provides and/or participates in collecting statistical data for research
•Participates in assessment/evaluation of procedures, policies and protocols; evaluates, updates, and initiates departmental policy and procedural changes and manuals as required
•Participates in clinical rounds and educational opportunities within the fertility clinic
Performs other related patient care responsibilities to facilitate the provision of optimal patient care.
•Liaises with patients; explains and ensures informed consent (verbal/written) is obtained for procedures, when necessary.
•Explains procedures in detail to patients to alleviate concerns relating to procedures
•Prepares room/area for appropriate procedures
•Liaises with appropriate personnel to verify pertinent patient data (i.e. lab results), examination orders and/or concerns prior to performing procedures.
Operates, troubleshoots and ensures ultrasound, medical imaging and ancillary equipment are performing in an effective and efficient manner.
•Maintains imaging and ancillary equipment in good working condition including cleaning scanning equipment; performing routine maintenance, reporting faults relating to all ancillary equipment, in a timely manner, maintaining appropriate records and taking the necessary follow-up actions
•Maintains responsibility and accountability for equipment quality control and quality assurance in all assigned area, as set by departmental protocols
•Maintains responsibility and accountability for the setting up and dismantling of sterile trays, adhering to strict codes of aseptic technique if applicable.
•Participates in the assessment and evaluation of new equipment, as required
Prepares reports required to document all procedures and test results.
•Provides preliminary written technical impressions of ultrasound findings; discusses ultrasound findings of real time imaging with the radiologist/resident or fellow
•Completes electronic and written documentation for the complete traceability of medical images, in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures
•Responsible and accountable in ensuring images acquired during a patient’s exam are archived and permanently stored
•Produces high quality imaging and maintains precise records to facilitate the provision of statistical data for publications, case studies, and administrative purposes; ensures the accuracy, legibility and completeness of findings are submitted for reporting.
•Documents and communicates critical values immediately to the appropriate personnel
•Documents and relays “Stat” results, as they become available to referring physician under the direction of the resident, fellow or radiologist
•Documents written technical impressions in duplicate or in the Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS)
•Communicates the technical impression to the specialist, resident, fellow, or radiologist on call, in a timely manner.
Observes and understands policies and procedures of MSF and Sinai Health System and adheres to the mission and value statements.
•Complies with and understands Sinai Health System mission, vision, value statement, and strategic goals, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulated Health Discipline Act, Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act, and other relevant regulation, legislation, guidelines and pertinent labor laws.
•Complies with and understands environmental regulations pertaining to medical imaging film processing if applicable
•Maintains safe working practices, observes, attends and/or completes online eLearning modules that include but not limited to Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (W.H.M.I.S.) and fire prevention sessions, as required; complies with and follows regulations and guidelines regarding patient positioning and safety.
•Notifies and escalates to supervisory personnel of all safety issues relating to staff and patients; completes an Employee Incident Report for all work related accidents within established timeline
•Maintains and protects patient confidentiality and safety
•Maintains registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) each year; and provides the Charge Sonographer with the registration documentation by the date required by departmental or hospital policy
Performs other duties related to the job classification, as required
Job Requirements *
•Successful completion of an accredited degree/post diploma Ultrasound program, or recognized equivalent preferred.
•Consideration for hire may also be given to applicants currently enrolled in an accredited degree/post diploma Ultrasound program – as a condition of hire the Ultrasound program must be successfully completed within six (6) months of hire
•Successful completion of a BCLS program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification
•Registered with Sonography Canada with CRGS designation
•Registered with American Registry of Diagnostic Sonographers (ARDMS) and Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB) and Abdomen (AB)
•Registered with College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO)
•1 year recent related experience in fertility imaging (i.e. follicular monitoring) preferred
•Demonstrated maintenance of CME credits
•Preference will be given to applicants who have maintained clinical skills as required by the position
•Demonstrates the ability to train in a variety of ultrasound related examinations, procedures and equipment.
•Fulfill certification requirements and maintain credentials as required by the department
