What programs are accepting International Applicants?

Michener is now accepting international applicants into all full-time programs. There is a limited number of spaces available in our programs for international students at this time.

Who is considered to be an International Student?

An international applicant/student is an applicant who is a citizen of a country other than Canada and does not hold a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident status in Canada.

What is the English proficiency requirement? Do I have to have TOEFL or IELTS to apply?

All applicants are required to demonstrate English proficiency. Applicants who completed their education outside of Canada, in a country not considered English dominant, are required to demonstrate English proficiency by meeting ONE of the categories below:

1. Pass an English Language Assessment Test

You can take ONE of the English language proficiency tests listed below. Test results are only valid for two (2) years.

Michener English Language Assessment (MELA)

The Michener English Language Assessment (MELA) measures English Language proficiency in four skill areas: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. The MELA test scores are reported using the Canadian Language Benchmarks which are a Canadian national standard of English Language proficiency. A minimum score of 8 on all components is required to be considered for admission to Michener programs. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Applicants require an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with all components (bands) of the test being at a 6 or above. ‘Academic’ test format is required. IELTS One Skill retake will not be considered for Admissions. All scores must be achieved on a single test date.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Michener only accepts TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Home Edition for admissions. Applicants must meet a minimum total score of 100 with a minimum of 22 each in the Writing and Speaking components. All scores must be achieved on a single test date. TOEFL MyBest scores will not be accepted for admissions.

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)

The scoring for PTE Academic is an overall score of 65, with no communicative skill (reading, listening, writing, speaking) under 60. Pearson PTE can typically provide a test date within 48 hours.

2. Registered or Licensed Canadian Health Care Provider

If you are a registered/licensed Health Care Provider in Canada, you are exempt from providing an English Language Assessment. This exemption does not apply to applicants to the Bridging Programs.

3. Completed Two-Years of Full-Time Post-Secondary Education where English is a Dominant Language

Applicants whose first language is not English but who have completed two (2) years of full-time education at a post-secondary institution in a country where the dominant language is English are exempt from completing an English language assessment. If you fall under this category, you must provide an official transcript (or WES/ICAS evaluation) as part of your application. If I graduated from high school in Canada or another English-speaking country, do I still need to submit an English Language Test (TOEFL or IELTS)?

• If you graduated from a high school in Canada, you do not have to submit an English Language Assessment
• If you are an international student in Canada and have completed two years of full-time post-secondary education, you do not have to submit an English Language Assessment. However, you have to submit proof of successful completion, via official transcript, of two years of full-time post-secondary education
• If your education was completed in a country that is English language dominant (refer to the English Language Requirements page), you do not have to submit an English Language Assessment. Your education must be evaluated. Please refer to the Internationally Educated Applicants page for more information.

How do I apply to Full-Time programs as an International Student?

Applications to Michener’s full-time programs are submitted to Ontario College Application Services (OCAS).
Applications for Michener’s Master of Science – Cardiovascular Perfusion program are submitted through Michener Self-Service.

How long do I need to wait to get the decision from your institute after sending my applications?

Offers of admissions to Full-Time programs are typically sent out in April. Decisions for Part-Time programs are typically released in July.

Do you have an application deadline?

All Michener programs have application deadlines:

• Full-Time applications close on February 1.
• Part-Time applications close May 31.
• Full/Part-Time applications (Fundamentals of Health Care) close May 31.

For Full-Time programs do I need to pay an application fee?

Applicants must submit their application and pay the application fee online through OCAS, OUAC for joint programs with the University of Toronto, or Michener Self-Service for Cardiovascular Perfusion. Please refer to OCAS and OUAC for their current base application fee information. Note that applications submitted via OCAS would require a supplemental fee of $55 (subject to change).

How do I apply to Part-Time programs as an International Student?

Applications to Michener’s part-time programs are submitted to Ontario College Application Services (OCAS). Note that only Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Imaging Professionals is accepting international applications for Fall 2024.

What do I need to study in Canada?

International students accepted into programs six months or longer at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada must apply for a Study Permit from the government of Canada. This requires as a minimum (additional requirements may be established  dependent upon circumstances):

• Proof of Acceptance;
• Proof of Identity;

When should I apply for a Study Permit?

Apply for your Study Permit once you have been accepted at Michener and have paid the non-refundable* deposit.  You will receive two letters from Michener as follows:

1. Offer of Admission: This letter is sent by the Registrar’s Office and is proof of obtaining a seat in the program. The letter must be signed and returned with the non-refundable* deposit to confirm acceptance of the offer;
2. Study Permit Letter: Once the non-refundable* deposit is received the International Department will issue a Student Permit Letter including student name, student ID number, program name, program start date and expected completion date, and Michener’s Designated Learning Institution (DLI) number.

*This deposit is refundable less a $100.00 processing fee if a Study Permit is not issued.

What is The Michener Institute’s Designated Learning Number(DLI #)?

The DLI# is a number assigned by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to a Designated Learning Institute. This number is required for a study permit application.  Michener Institute’s DLI# is 019395677373.

Where can I obtain the Study Permit application kit?

Are the tuition fees the same for all programs?

No. Tuition fees vary for each Program. Please visit the International Tuition Fees web page for more information.

Do I have to pay a full year’s tuition fee all at once?

No. Full-time program tuition fees are due one month prior to the start of each semester. For tuition payment deadlines, please visit Fees & Financial Aid.

Do I have to pay my fees before I can register?

Yes. Students who have received an Offer of Admission from Michener will need to pay a non-refundable deposit* of $1500.00 to hold their seat and then must pay the balance of their first-semester tuition by published deadlines. Details will be provided in the Offer of Admission.

*The $1,500 deposit is refundable less a $100 processing fee if Study Permit is not issued.

When should I pay my tuition fee?

Tuition deadlines per term are posted on the Fees and Financial Aid webpage. You can also refer to your tuition invoice for this information.

How should I pay my tuition fee?

International students can pay their fees through the Michener Self-Service portal. You can also pay by wire transfer, credit card (a 2.5% surcharge will be added), bank draft, money order, certified cheque (Personal cheques are not accepted) or by debit in person.

What is your refund policy?

International students who are unsuccessful in obtaining a study permit, will be refunded the full amount of tuition paid to date minus a $100 CAD fee. Copy of the Student Permit rejection letter from the Government of Canada must be submitted to receive your refund. Do you have scholarships for International Students?

Can International Students work on campus?

Yes, if you are registered and attending a full-time program at Michener and have a valid study permit and a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Please visit the Government of Canada website for more information.

Can International Students work off campus?

Yes, you are eligible to work outside of Michener without a work permit if you are registered and attending a full-time program at Michener and have a valid study permit and a Social Insurance Number (SIN). For more information, go to Work off campus as an international student.

Do you provide health insurance for International Students?

Yes. All International Students enrolled in full-time programs are provided with health insurance as part of the Mandatory Non-tuition fees. For more information visit the International Tuition Fees web page.

Do you provide student housing or a dormitory?

Yes. First-year students can apply to stay in Schatz Hall, a five-story residence that is a wing of Michener’s main building. For more information please visit the Residence page.
