Duties
Position Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist will report to the Technical Specialist and Manager, Laboratory Services and is responsible for ensuring high quality patient-focused care through accurate and timely laboratory tests and analyses. The Medical Laboratory Technologist works in support of Brantford General Hospital’s departments.
Primary Responsibilities:
Prepare, maintain and operate medical laboratory equipment in accordance with hospital and laboratory procedures;
Maintain inventory records and ensure laboratory supplies are adequately stocked;
Conduct medical laboratory tests in an efficient and accurate manner to support the operations of hospital departments and physicians;
Collect and test biological samples using established laboratory techniques and procedures;
Interpret test results and analyze data to support patient health outcomes;
Document and report laboratory results in a timely manner and provide reliable information which will guide patient diagnoses, monitoring and treatment;
Ensure testing techniques are standardized and quality-controlled to maintain accuracy and reliability in results;
Adhere to appropriate laboratory and governmental health and safety protocols in areas such as personal protective equipment and handling and disposal of biological samples;
Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work environment;
Ensure that patient and hospital information is kept confidential;
Participate in staff meetings with other technologists and hospital staff;
Other duties as required
Requirements
Must be an active member of the CMLTO with a certificate including Hematology, Biochemistry and Transfusion Medicine
Post-secondary education in medical laboratory science is required
Prior experience as a medical laboratory technologist is preferred
Must understand the principles and have the ability to perform analytical techniques on patient specimens using established protocols.
Must have strong computer skills including a Laboratory Information System, MS Office and data entry.
Must have well developed organizational skills and proven ability to multi-task
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to function as part of an interdisciplinary team
Reliable individual with excellent attendance record and able to work all shifts
