Employing approximately 550 highly skilled and dedicated employees, Norfolk General Hospital continues to be a full service 120-bed hospital with round the clock on-call coverage of Specialists in Surgery, Anesthesia, Internal Medicine, and Obstetrics, as well as on-site 24 hour per day medical coverage.

Duties

The ideal candidate would be dedicated to patient care and committed to championing the Hospital’s Mission to relieve illness and suffering, and help people live healthier lives. While adhering to departmental policies and procedures the ideal candidate will be responsible for the following;
• Embedding tissue with embedding station.
• Cutting tissue with a microtome, and cryostat.
• Staining using both an automated strainer, and manually perform special stains
• May be trained for grossing of small and some medium sized samples.
• Appropriately communicating sample errors, and issues.
• Ensuring effective operation of equipment.
• Following Quality Control measures for Laboratory
• Maintaining confidentiality
• Performing all assigned duties in compliance with Laboratory Quality Management System
• Adhering to NGH health and safety policies, procedures and provisions and recognizing and reporting of unsafe hazards and work practices
• Meeting technical competency expectations of the professional College and Hospital, including participating in educational courses, conferences, workshops as required

Requirements

Education & Qualifications
• Licensed to perform histology, and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario. Maintains current CMLTO Quality Assurance portfolio
• Recent experience in histology preferred
• Experience reviewing QC slides
• Experience using a laboratory information system (Meditech preferred). Accurate and efficient data entry skills
• Working knowledge of Canadian Laboratory Accreditation requirements and processes
• Experience in reviewing sample integrity.
• Self-starter who has the ability to work well with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced medical setting as well as the ability to confidently work alone as required
• Highly developed organizational skills and the ability to multitask
• Demonstrated communication and customer relations skills
• Ability to work in a team based, multi-skilled environment with other hospital services to provide quality patient care
• Excellent attendance record
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
