Duties
Under the direction of the Manager, Imaging Services and supervision of the Charge Nuclear Medicine Technologist, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs all aspects of a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment while working as part of the Nuclear Medicine team.
Within this role the Nuclear Medicine Technologist is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Science Centre’s strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Responsible for the elution of generator and the preparation and quality control of radiopharmaceuticals.
- Participate in the quality control of instruments such as dose calibrators, detectors and imaging equipment.
- Responsible for proper patient identification, verification of patient pregnancy or breast feeding, explanation of procedure and administration of radiopharmaceuticals and radioactive therapies.
- Responsible for patient preparation, positioning and use of proper techniques as outlined in procedure manual or as requested by Nuclear Medicine radiologist to perform general nuclear medicine imaging, SPECT/CT and PET/CT acquisition, image processing, data storage and management on workstations and database management in PACS.
- Scanning room stocking of supplies/linen, equipment cleaning. Scanning room maintenance and quality control procedures.
- Following KHSC Radiation Safety Manual policies and CNSC regulations will maintain the Nuclear Medicine area in a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Follow best practices for working with radioisotopes in the Hot Lab and scanning rooms.
- Participating in the idea generation, implementation, monitoring and reporting to support Quality improvement in Nuclear Medicine and across our department.
- Responsible for the receipt and inventory of radioisotopes. Maintain radioactive waste documentation and disposal records. Ensure that hot lab is clean and orderly with adequate supplies available.
- Communicates with inpatient and emergency units to organize imaging requests and procedure times, booking inpatient transportation. Documentation in patient chart.
- Patient care including recognizing deteriorating patient condition or an emergency event.
- Responsible for identifying performance problems with nuclear medicine equipment and notifying the appropriate personnel.
- Participate in orientation training of new staff and training of student Nuclear Medicine Technologists.
- Occasional standby for radiation safety purposes may be required during inpatient I131 treatments.
Requirements
- Active registration with the College of Medical Radiation
- Technologists of Ontario Nuclear Medicine required.
- Registered with CAMRT preferred.
- Registered with OAMRT preferred.
- 3 years of experience is an asset.
- New technologists are welcome. Adequate training and support will be given to ensure competence and skills are gained.
- Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication skills.
- Proficient with medical terminology.
- Ability to communicate with a high level of professionalism in interpersonal relations.
- Evidence of strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize; work under pressure and show flexibility.
- Must have strong independent decision making skills with a high level of initiative.
- Discretion and maturity in handling confidential matters.
- Demonstrated computer knowledge, proficiency with an electronic hospital information system, PACS and patient transport system.
- Proven ability to attend work on a regular basis.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
