Duties

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures in accordance with standards of professional practice and established departmental policies and procedures.
2. Explains procedures and monitors patient care by observing and responding in accordance with policies and procedures.
3. Checks results of procedures and records acquired patient data on technologist worksheets, completing
requisitions and related forms and paperwork.
4. Utilizes computerized systems to maintain patient and hospital records, including obtaining and entering patient
demographics, histories and charts as required, in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and
professional practice standards.
5. Provides imaging procedure assistance, such as obtaining appropriate equipment and determining patient position, to radiologists, physicians and other members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
6. Acts as a resource person by collegially sharing, demonstrating and providing guidance regarding technical procedures, and in particular diagnostic ultrasound procedure leadership, to other technologists, students and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
7. In collaboration with other technologists and the Supervisor, participates in the development of the section and departmental goals and objectives which incorporate the mission, vision, goals, objectives, values, philosophy,
policies, and standards of the Vancouver Island Health Authority
8. Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team by collaborating with other members of the health care team in the provision of quality, client-centred care; coordinating the technical procedures required with other aspects of healthcare; and promoting effective communication with patients and staff
9. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement by conducting audits, completing appropriate reports, monitoring clinical indicators and satisfaction surveys, providing feedback and following up on risk factors and making recommendations for improvements.
10. Ensures a safe and healthy working environment by observing universal precautions and infection control
procedures; removing obvious hazards; reporting faulty equipment, accidents, injuries and near misses. And adhering to and enforcing rules regarding safety.
11. Assists with procedures, such as biopsies and interventional procedures, as required.
12. Performs cardiac and/or vascular sonography procedures as qualified and required.
13. Demonstrates personal initiative in maintaining professional currency and skills by participating in relevant educational activities, as required.
14. Maintains designated work area by checking and cleaning equipment, setting up examination trays for specific procedures. Receives and stocks supplies and identifies depleted stock and malfunctioning equipment requiring repair in accordance with established policies and procedures.
15. Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

Graduation from an approved Ultrasound Technologist Diploma program.

Sonography Canada and/or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification
credentials as a Generalist Sonographer and one (1) year recent, related experience in a health care setting, or an
equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Eligible for registration with Sonography Canada.

*** Note- This position is Sunday 0800 to 1600 as well as Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 1600 to 2200. Relocation of $3000 for new Island Health hires within BC and $5000 for out of province. Signing bonus of $20, 000 per 1.0 FTE can be offered to external candidates. ***
