Duties

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs all nuclear medicine imaging in-vivo and in-vitro examinations/procedures/reports and other related
patient care functions, modeling best practices and adherence to established departmental policies and procedures.
2. Performs all diagnostic and therapeutic radioisotope procedures, laboratory work, Planar Imaging, SPECT/non
Diagnostic and SPECT/Diagnostic CT imaging, and preparation/administration of therapy doses.
3. Explains diagnostic/therapeutic procedures to patients and ensures their comfort.
4. Performs calibration and basic quality control procedures on related imaging, counting, and laboratory equipment according to established procedures.
5. Performs venipuncture, or sets up IV access for collecting patient blood for labelling procedures or delivering radioisotopes/radioactive labelled blood products for patient exams
6. Liaises with Supervisor or designate or nuclear medicine physicians concerning test results and equipment malfunctions.
7. In conjunction with the Supervisor or designate, investigates, evaluates and selects new and revised nuclear medicine exam methodology/procedures.
8. Maintains standards, regulations and records concerning radiation protection and general safety precautions in the work area.
9. Handles, stores, and disposes of radioactive wastes as per the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)
regulations/standards and Island Health procedures/policies.
10. In conjunction with the Supervisor/ or designate, investigates, evaluates and selects new and revised nuclear medicine exam methodology/procedures.
11. Demonstrates nuclear medicine procedures to new employees and students on clinical rotation.
12. Operates multiple computerized applications related to Picture Archive & Communication System (PACS) and
Hospital Information System / Radiology Information System (HIS/RIS).
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) certification as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist
(RTNM). Graduation from an approved nuclear medicine technology diploma program. Eligible for membership in the CAMRT. Completion of CT education courses and/or an equivalent of in-house education in physics, instrumentation and CT clinical applications or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. One year recent, related nuclear medicine experience in an acute hospital setting. Experience in all types of Diagnostic/Therapeutic
radioisotope procedures.

- Ability to operate related equipment, including a computerized systems and a variety of software applications.

Work as part of a team, with other staff, and with patients/clients and caregivers/families.
