Duties

What you’ll do

The Respiratory Therapist supports the PICU’s interdisciplinary team with respiratory therapy expertise for hospital patients with serious health needs who require the care level of the PICU. The 28-bed PICU is located in the Teck Acute Care Centre in the heart of the BC Children’s Hospital and is the flagship for the transformation of child health in BC. Usual duties include:

Provide exemplary patient care through case review and physical assessment; recommendations for plan of care; documentation of patient response and outcomes
Operate respiratory equipment for patient care, including initial set up, ongoing quality control procedures, and initiating appropriate adjustments required by care
Support patient care for indiviudals who are ventilator dependent, including assessment and monitoring to meet care protocols and daily care plans
Recommend and administer individualized medical gas therapies for patients
Provide invasive and non-invasive cardio-pulmonary monitoring

Requirements

What you bring

Qualifications and Certifications

Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy
Successful completion of the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care examination
Current and continuing registration with British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT) and the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT)
Current Basic Life Support certification
Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification
Skills and Experience

Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing; comfortable with direct interactions with patients and their families, interdisciplinary team members, and respiratory therapy colleagues
Approaches daily work in an organized and efficient manner; with the ability to set appropriate priorities and meet deadlines
Maintains flexibility in schedule to collaborate effectively as a team member, and to continually focus on tasks at hand despite interruptions and workload fluctuations
Uses critical thinking skills to meet daily challenges both proactively when possible, and reactively to address rapidly changing situations in patient care
Physically carry out the duties of the position and operate all pertinent respiratory-related equipment
Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Hours of Work: Rotating Schedule; 06:30 - 18:46 / 18:30 - 06:46

Salary

Wage: $37.89 to $47.31 per hour
