Duties

Performs molecular genetic procedures in accordance with protocol and licensing regulations, and under the general supervision of the person responsible for the Molecular Genetics Laboratory in Newborn Screening Ontario.

Performs established routine and specialized laboratory procedures
Maintains an acceptable workload as determined by the Laboratory Head
Summarizes results and completes reports to the specifications of the Laboratory Head
Recognizes the need for additional testing, and performs tests as required
Identifies technical problems and takes appropriate corrective action
Maintains up-to-date knowledge and skill level for all procedures currently used in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory of NSO
Participates in research and development work as required within the Laboratory
Participates in making team decisions regarding sharing of additional duties
Is available for week-end and statutory holidays on-call duty if required
Maintains accurate files and database records
Co-operate in a cross-functional team and foster a positive working environment
Participate in the instruction of medical laboratory technologists
Shares with other technologists and staff additional duties to ensure the efficient functioning of the laboratory, such as: cleaning equipment, maintaining supply of solutions and reagents, receiving and storing supplies, ensuring a clean and tidy work place
Conforms to all laboratory safety regulations, and works in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Shares in maintaining quality assurance including: regular review of methodologies, identification of need for new equipment, and reporting of any errors or incidents if they occur to the Sr. Scientist, Molecular NSO.
Accepts responsibility for ongoing professional development and participates in continuing education opportunities available within CHEO

Requirements

Criminal Records Check (Essential)
CMLTO Licensed Technologist, with a designation in Molecular Genetics or Clinical Genetics (Essential) Bachelor of Science or equivalent in a program that includes lecture courses and laboratory courses in Molecular Genetics (Preferred)
Previous experience applying molecular genetic techniques to the analysis of human genetic diseases (Preferred)
Accuracy and precision in performing laboratory procedures (Essential)
Ability to organize workload and establish priorities (Essential)
Ability to perform preventative and routine maintenance of equipment (Essential)
Ability to recognize abnormal or unusual test results, and to take appropriate action (Essential)
Ability to exercise good judgement (Essential)
Ability and willingness to work as part of a team (Essential)
Prior experience working with Luminex equipment (Preferred)
Prior experience working with Next Generation Sequencing technology (Preferred)
Prior experience working with Mass Array (Sequenom) (Preferred)
Bilingual (English/French) (Preferred)
