We’re excited to introduce Claire-Marie Peck and Cindy Chow to all of Michener’s incoming students. These second-year students are organizing this year’s activities and are your guides to Orientation 2022.
Find out what Claire and Cindy are looking forward to most at Orientation, their best advice for new Michener students and how the pandemic has affected their perspective on healthcare.
Claire-Marie Peck
What program are you in?
I’m in my second year of the Radiation Therapy program.
Who is your hero/heroine and why?
My dad. No matter what challenges or struggles he faced, he always faced them strongly and with humour. He was an amazing person and I strive to be half the person he was.
Has the pandemic changed your perspective on healthcare at all?
It has truly shown me how important healthcare is. This summer, I completed my first clinical placement and saw firsthand how important the ability to access healthcare is. Throughout the pandemic, many patients have experienced delayed and sometimes canceled treatment. I hope that as a result of the pandemic, we’ve developed ways to prevent this from happening in the future.
What is your best piece of advice for new Michener students?
GET INVOLVED! School is so much more than tests and assignments. By being involved, I’ve really gotten to know my peers (especially since we were online most of last year). I encourage you to take advantage of the multiple clubs available and go to their events.
What orientation event are you most looking forward to?
The Rec Room! I’ve never been there and I think a little friendly competition among peers will be a great experience.
What TV show are you binge-watching right now?
Stranger Things (I’m about three seasons behind still).
What’s been your most memorable moment at Michener so far?
Definitely the in-person labs. I had a fantastic lab group and meeting them outside of Zoom was awesome. Spending time with your peers in-person was something I took for granted in undergrad!
Cindy Chow
What program are you in?
I’m in my second year of the Radiological Technology program.
What Orientation event are you looking forward to most?
It’s so difficult to just choose one but I’m excited for the escape room at Captive and The Rec Room. I think we will all have so much fun trying to solve puzzles and play games together!
Has the pandemic changed your perspective on healthcare at all?
Yes. We don’t give enough credit to healthcare workers! They risk their lives to help patients. They’re overworked and deserve so much. I feel like healthcare workers are often underappreciated.
What is your best piece of advice for new Michener students?
Remember to take breaks when you’re studying. It can be overwhelming. You need to pace yourself so you don’t burn out. Never suffer in silence – we have resources available to help you.
What TV show are you binge-watching right now?
Stranger Things and SpyxFamily.
Who is your hero/heroine and why?
My parents are my heroes. They showed me what it’s like to be empathetic and hardworking, and made sacrifices so I can live comfortably and achieve my goals. My parents provide me with unconditional love and support and that makes me realize how important it is to pass that forward to people that I care about.
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be?
I would choose to teleport in order to avoid traffic. I’m not a big fan of commuting, especially during rush hour. It would be so nice to just appear somewhere whenever you like. It would save time and I could get so much done!
