On May 18, 2023, The Michener Institute determined that it was the target of a cyber security incident where student, staff and alumni data was exposed. We immediately initiated an investigation into this incident. As part of this investigation, we determined that confidential information was impacted, that may have included personal information such as banking details, social insurance number, home address, or corporate financial information.
The protection and safeguarding of our students, alumni and staff’s personal information at Michener is a responsibility that we take seriously. We want our students, staff and alumni to be aware of the situation as it progresses, including the steps we are taking to address this issue. We deeply regret this incident and are committed to ensuring that those who have been affected have the support they need.
This incident has triggered some immediate action steps at Michener to minimize the risk of similar future data incidents, including:
- Notification to the Information & Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.
- Notification to law enforcement of the incident.
- Working with external experts to fully investigate the cause of the incident.
