Today we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. As we recognize our current and future healthcare leaders for their accomplishments, we profile Rosetta Belcastro, Academic Chair, Medical Laboratory Sciences at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN.

Rosetta Belcastro is humbled to play a foundational role in shaping the future of medical laboratory sciences. As a leader at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, she is especially energized by convocation ceremonies – where she can celebrate the achievements of graduating students.

“There’s such a satisfying feeling in watching people grow,” says Rosetta. “When you’re able to shake a student’s hand, give them their diploma and know you’ll get to watch or hear about their progression throughout their careers, it’s incredibly fulfilling.”

Rosetta’s career path reflects steady growth fueled by perseverance and lifelong learning. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, earning a dual degree in physical anthropology and biology. After graduation, she began working at SickKids where she contributed to 40+ peer-reviewed publications and supported major CIHR-funded research, advancing knowledge in neonatal lung health and contributing to improved clinical understanding and care.

Recognizing the need for formal leadership training, she returned to the University of Toronto to complete a Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources Management. “While you learn your skills at the bench, you also need formal training and formal skills,” she says.

Her leadership journey continued at University Health Network (UHN), where she advanced to Senior Manager, Pathology Clinical Operations and Administrative Services. Through her work at UHN, Rosetta frequently collaborated with Michener – with clinical placements for students as one example. A chance visit to Michener to discuss placements led her to discover and then apply for the Academic Chair role in MLS.

The position aligned perfectly with her passion for people and education, and she has been with Michener ever since.

Rosetta’s commitment to self-improvement has led her to become an Osgoode LL.M. graduate in labour and employment law and a PhD candidate in Human Resources Management. Her studies have brought deep expertise in labour relations, governance and ethical leadership, strengthening her ability to lead complex public institutions with accountability, integrity and a sustained commitment to advancing the public interest.

“Understanding employee rights has helped me grow and improve with my teams,” she says.

Rosetta continues to shape the broader health and education landscape through national presentations, sector leadership forums and community engagement – including speaking on the role of laboratory medicine in advancing women’s health. Rosetta’s leadership has been recognized through national and sector awards, as an Excellence Awardee for Canadian HR Leader of the Year and a Women in Leadership award.

Today, Rosetta continues to lead with curiosity and purpose.

“People are my passion,” she says. “I’m always looking to grow and learn.” A powerful reminder that success isn’t about comparison, she says – “it’s about believing in your own potential and continually investing in yourself.”
