Meet The Orientation Coordinators
Get to know more about your Orientation 2026 Coordinators, Maria Butt and Tiana O’Connor, and what they are most excited about for this year’s Orientation.
What program are you in?
Why did you choose to pursue a career in healthcare?
I want to be that person for people who helps them when they are vulnerable and shows care in the moments that they need it most. There are so many challenges and health conditions that we don’t see, and it can be difficult for people to open up about what they’re going through, even with their closest friends and family. I get to be someone who is there for them, not only as someone who understands what they may be going through, but to provide the best and most empathetic care possible.
I also find healthcare to be such a beautiful field because it has so much depth. There are so many different facets and constant developments in how we understand and care for the human body and our environment. There is always more to learn and so many different ways to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
What TV show are you binge-watching right now?
Unfortunately, I’m not binging anything at the moment, but my favourite sit-com of all time is definitely Seinfeld. It really cracks me up.
What’s your favourite restaurant in Toronto?
Sugo on Bloor. I would gladly have that for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
I really want to road trip to Yosemite.
Who would you say is your hero?
I’d say my mom, she’s one of the most resilient people I know. Every time she tells me a story about her life, I gain a newfound respect for all that she’s done and accomplished. She’s an inspiration to me and also gives the best advice ever.
What’s been your most memorable moment at Michener so far?
Becoming friends with my lab-mates and grabbing ice cream with them after class.
What Orientation event are you most excited about?
I am so excited about puppy play, I can’t wait to see them!
What is your best piece of advice for new Michener students?
Don’t be so hard on yourself! Find balance in everything you do and try your best not to avoid the tasks you’ve given yourself. Whether that’s allocating time to studying or taking the time to take care of yourself and prioritize eating well. Balance, patience and consistency will take you so far! And always believe in yourself even when times are looking rough.
What program are you in?
I’m going into my second year of Respiratory Therapy!
Why did you choose to pursue a career in healthcare?
I’ve always been drawn to healthcare because I wanted a career where I could genuinely connect with people and make a difference during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. I also love that healthcare is a field where you never really stop learning.
You’re constantly being challenged to think on your feet, grow, and become better at what you do.
What TV show are you binge-watching right now?
Re-binging Severance!
What’s your favourite restaurant in Toronto?
Koh Lipe!
What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
Peru! I would love to explore the Amazon River and see the rainforest.
Who would you say is your hero?
My brother! He’s one of the most hardworking and reliable people I know, but also one of the kindest and most supportive. I really admire how creative and resourceful he is. No matter what gets thrown his way, he somehow finds a solution and keeps moving forward. He’s incredibly resilient, and he has always been someone I can count on. He’s definitely shaped the kind of person I want to be.
What’s been your most memorable moment at Michener so far?
It’s hard to pick one specific moment because honestly, some of my favourite memories have come from the little things. I love the late nights in the library preparing for practicals with my classmates, where somehow, we always end up laughing and joking with each other. It makes the stress feel so much lighter.
Those are the moments that have made Michener feel like home to me.
What Orientation event are you most excited about?
It’s so hard to choose after spending the summer planning them! I think I’m most excited to finally see everyone together at the in-person events. Knowing that somewhere in that room, people might be meeting the friends they’ll have for the rest of their lives is such a rewarding thought.
Oh, and the puppies! Definitely the puppies.
What is your best piece of advice for new Michener students?
Say yes to things, especially at the beginning. I completely understand feeling awkward or shy, that’s honestly how I feel in most new situations too! Go to the events, introduce yourself to the person sitting beside you, join the club, and put yourself out there even when it feels a little uncomfortable.
Michener starts to feel small and familiar surprisingly quickly, and the people around you will become such a huge part of your experience. You don’t need to have everything figured out on your first day. None of us did!
