About the Course

Biochemistry Micro-credential for MLA (BCMC110) is a hybrid course, with 12-weeks of virtual classes and three (3) mandatory on-site sessions held at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN over three (3) weekends.

This program is intended for Medical Laboratory Assistants / Medical Laboratory Technicians who, with the support of their employers, have demonstrated an interest in biochemistry and would like to achieve a micro-credential to help advance their knowledge and skills.

Note: Successful completion of the Biochemistry Micro-Credential for MLA course alone does not qualify an individual to become a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO). We suggest you reach out to CMLTO directly to confirm what is required to become a registered MLT with them.


Career Outcomes/About the Profession

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of Routine Practices and safe laboratory practice
  • Identify, documents and report deficiencies that may affect the quality of analysis
  • Perform point-of-care techniques, identify sources of interference and initiate corrective action as delegated
  • Perform automated and manual laboratory testing under the supervision of an MLT, identify sources of interference and initiate corrective actions as delegated
  • Recognize malfunctions in equipment/instruments, initiate and document corrective action
  • Apply the principles of Quality Assurance to laboratory analysis and appropriate follow-up action where required
  • Demonstrate effective problem solving/troubleshooting strategies and initiate appropriate follow up
