About the Program

This is a healthcare professional curriculum focused on long-term ventilation (LTV) education, specifically designed for Unregulated Healthcare Workers working in Ontario who support individuals with LTV needs across community and inpatient settings. The program addresses various aspects of patient care and available resources through case-based learning.

Developed in partnership with the Provincial Long-Term Ventilation Strategy and The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, this Ministry of Health-funded course provides participants with a certificate of completion.

Funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health is available to support a limited number of learners in this course, allowing eligible participants to enroll at no cost. To inquire about eligibility and availability of funded seats, please contact certificate@ontariolongtermventilation.com. Eligibility for a funded seat is limited to Ontario residents.

Outcomes

By the end of this program, you will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of long-term ventilation, common disease progressions requiring long-term ventilation, and how the anatomy and physiology work with the ventilator.
  • Describe the role of the unregulated healthcare provider in supporting patients who require long-term ventilator care.
  • Differentiate between invasive and non-invasive ventilation and how that may impact the care requirements of the patient.
  • Describe the steps involved in performing stoma and tracheostomy care, including suctioning and mechanical ventilation.
  • Identify the safety mechanisms used to deliver safe patient care within the potential scope of practice as an unregulated healthcare provider.
  • Understand your role as a caregiver in supporting patients and their families as the patient’s function declines.
