As the first day of classes arrived this September, the wave of fresh faces on Michener campus included Dr. Michael O’Leary, the new Principal of The Michener Institute of Education at UHN and Dr. Daniel C. Andreae Chair in Transformational Healthcare Education.

“I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael O’Leary at Michener, who brings a wealth of leadership experience and academic excellence to this role,” says Dr. Brian Hodges, Executive Vice-President of Education and Chief Medical Officer at UHN.

Dr. O’Leary’s career spans nearly two decades in Ontario’s post-secondary sector, and includes senior positions at Humber College, the University of Guelph-Humber and Sheridan College.

It’s exciting to be at an institution doing such great work, a true leader in healthcare education that still has so much potential and capacity to grow.

A published scholar, Dr. O’Leary holds a BSc and Master’s in Kinesiology from York University, where he also completed a PhD in researching the molecular mechanisms of muscle atrophy and exercise adaptation. He has contributed to peer-reviewed journals and key academic texts, including ACSM’s Advanced Exercise Physiology.

In his role as Principal and Chair of Michener, Dr. O’Leary will serve as a member of the UHN Executive Leadership Forum. He will lead Michener at an exciting time in its evolution, as the Institute strengthens its integration with UHN while it continues to drive innovation and shape the future leaders of Canada’s health system.

“It’s exciting to be at an institution doing such great work, a true leader in healthcare education that still has so much potential and capacity to grow,” says Dr. O’Leary.

As he begins to discover more of the teaching and initiatives undertaken, and meet members of the Michener community, Dr. O’Leary says he is very optimistic for the path that lies ahead.

“Every day spent at Michener has been a wonderful experience, getting to meet so many great people with such a wide breadth of knowledge and expertise,” he says. “I truly look forward to all that we will achieve together.”
