AC–REG-POL-075
Department: Academic/Registrar
Creation Date: April 16, 2025
Approval Date: July 16, 2025
Effective Date: September 2, 2025

Purpose

In the course of a student’s academic program there may be occasions where a failing course grade prevents them from progressing to the next semester / course.  Michener may grant students the opportunity to improve their course grade through the completion of supplemental assessment.  Michener regards supplemental assessment as a privilege, not a right and may be granted under specific circumstances.

Policy

    1. The Program (Faculty and Academic Chair) will determine student eligibility for supplemental assessment at the end of each semester.
    2. Students will receive supplemental assessments in one of three ways:
      1. Granted automatically by the Program for first-time, single-course failure with an overall course mark no more than 10% below the passing grade (Automatic)
      2. Reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Program if it is a subsequent failure, >10% below the passing grade or multiple failures in the same semester
      3. Granted after review and decision on a case-by-case basis by the Program Review Committee (PRC)
    3. Students who receive a passing grade on their supplemental assessment will receive a final course grade represented by a numerical value ( the minimum passing grade) followed by “S” (i.e., 60S) or in the case of a pass/fail course a “PS” grade. The maximum allowable grade in a course with a supplemental activity will be the minimum numerical passing grade or a PS for those courses without numerical grades.
    4. The Supplemental Assessment will take the form appropriate to the failed course and align with Course Learning Outcomes.
      1. The content and format of the Supplemental Assessment are determined by the Program.
      2. The Supplemental Assessment may be comprehensive in nature or require the student to repeat failed parts of the course.
    5. The supplemental assessment must take place by the end of the first week of the following semester ensuring that any existing academic accommodations are ensured. Exceptions may be granted by the Academic Chair under extenuating circumstances.

    CLINICAL

If a student receives supplemental assessment as part of a clinical course the form of the assessment may include the extension of clinical time and must align with the Tuition Payment for Extensions in Clinical Courses Policy.
