Simulation at Michener

Michener has the largest simulation-based learning centre in Canada. The centre, which serves our larger community as an innovative space for interprofessional, simulation-based learning and evaluation, includes simulation suites, debrief rooms and 24 clinical examination rooms typically used for objective structured clinical evaluations (OSCEs).

Take a virtual tour for a glimpse inside the learning centre and discover how the spaces can work for your learning and evaluation requirements.

Simulated Participant (SP) Program

Michener’s Simulated Participant (SP) Program enhances communication capacity, reinforces therapeutic alliances and provides reflective feedback through dynamic portrayals by trained simulation professionals.

As a member of the global simulated participant (SP) community of practice, Michener is a leader in SP methodology. We are dedicated to inspiring lifelong learning and bridging student success at entry-to-practice with continuous professional development through innovative human-centred communication.

Within the global SP community, Michener works to advance SP methodology to enhance healthcare education. SPs play an essential role in experiential learning by authentically portraying patients, clients and healthcare professionals. They provide constructive feedback and support both formative learning and summative assessment, ensuring fair and consistent opportunities for all learners.

Our values of integrity, safety, compassion and collaboration guide our approach and help to foster ethical, inclusive and learner-centred communication.

Who are Simulated Participants (SPs)?

Simulated Participants (SPs) are skilled individuals who portray roles such as patients or healthcare professionals to enhance learning. They provide valuable, learner-focused feedback from the client or patient’s perspective. SPs contribute to both formative and summative assessments to help ensure consistency in performance and give all learners equal opportunities for success.
