About the Course
Diabetes Management in Older Adults, updated to meet the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines and the American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Practice, is designed to provide practicing healthcare professionals with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the care and management of older adults living with diabetes. This course will build on the basic knowledge already in place.
In addition, learners will explore the most effective means to educate patients, their families and other healthcare providers. Topics covered include:
- Challenges of managing diabetes in the older adult
- Managing blood glucose
- Nutrition and meal planning
- Anti-hyperglycemic agents
- Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia
- Diabetes and Dementia
- Chronic complications
- Frailty and Geriatric Syndromes
- Advocating for change
Career Outcomes/About the Profession
Leaners will explore theories and techniques to assist older adult patients with diabetes (ages 70+) in sustaining the best quality of life possible. Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of diabetes (types, symptoms, and diagnosis), its development, progression and management in an older adult
- Develop, adapt and implement protocols related to diabetes care in a long-term care setting or a community setting
- Explain the importance of and advocate for a planned approach for managing diabetes among older adults living in long term care facilities or in the community
- Identify how to access resources for ongoing learning regarding diabetes
- Demonstrate a commitment to self-directed learning and professional development
