About the Profession
A chiropodist is a primary care professional who specializes in the assessment, management and prevention of dysfunctions, disorders and diseases of the foot. These conditions can include diabetes, sports and traumatic injuries, biomechanical disorders, ulcers and paediatric foot conditions. The foot is a complex structure and when a disorder or dysfunction affects the foot, it can affect a person’s general health and overall quality of life. A referral is not required to consult a chiropodist, however, they often work closely with other medical professionals as part of a health care team.
As a chiropodist, you can work as an independent practitioner in private practice or be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team in a variety of settings, including community health centers, family health teams, long-term care facilities, hospitals, or sports teams. The practice can be specialized to treat chronic conditions, such as diabetic ulcers, or more general practice enabling the practitioner to choose a specialty that interests them.
About the Program
Michener offers Canada’s only English-taught Chiropody program.
The program integrates didactic courses, hands-on practical labs, simulated clinical training and clinical practice right from the start of the program.
Students study the anatomy of the lower extremity, dissection, clinical pharmacology, pathophysiology and biomechanics of the lower limb and gait cycle. Under the supervision of licensed chiropodists in Michener’s on-site Chiropody clinic, students have the opportunity to treat patients. This hands-on experience allows them to practice and build upon their patient-care skills and procedural techniques, including podiatric soft tissue surgery, injections, biomechanics, wound care and radiology. In addition, students complete specialized external clinical placements where they gain additional real-world practice.
Graduates from this program are eligible to write the College of Chiropodists of Ontario provincial registration exam. Success in the exam is a requirement to practice as a licensed chiropodist in Ontario.

A unique aspect of our program is that our students get to experience hands-on clinical exposure to patients in year one. Clinical exposure is integrated every step of the way, every semester. It’s incredibly helpful for our students to apply their learnings as they go.
