Nerve Conduction Studies – EMG (NCCE100):
at a glance
Credential(s) Earned: Certificate
Program Length: 12 Weeks (includes Observership-see below)
Start Date: October 28, 2024
Tuition: Domestic: $1250
Application Deadline: October 15, 2024
Program Code: NCCE100
Description
The Michener Institute of Education at UHN uses a unique hybrid model in partnership with hospitals combining didactic with clinical mentorship during the 12-week program. The Nerve Conduction Studies Technology Certificate Program will provide learners with the introductory knowledge and exposure to best prepare themselves for employment in the field of nerve conduction technology. The innovative design integrates the knowledge of physiology and anatomy together with an overview of the clinical conditions in which this electrodiagnostic study can be of benefit. This will be delivered over a 12-week period with two weeks at its conclusion to visit and observe a variety of nerve conduction studies being completed in a clinical setting.
The program has been built to best prepare students for direct hire to EMG laboratories but does not provide the required training and prerequisite hands-on experience required to participate in the national Registration Examination process. Students will be educated in the process and provided the appropriate connections in which to pursue that certification. This will provide an excellent beginning to the challenging field of electromyography and nerve conduction studies and position graduates with a powerful foundation for seeking employment in this field.
Learning Outcomes
This Certificate program is a hybrid program, consisting of:
- An online learning component
- A clinical observational component
Upon successful completion of this program, the Learner will be able to:
- Explain the role and responsibilities of the EMG technologist in performing electrodiagnostic assessments while working within the EMG team
- Identify the peripheral nervous system anatomy relevant to electrodiagnostic testing, including the motor unit, spinal cord, dermatomes, myotomes, and structure of peripheral nerve
- Perform a basic history relevant to common peripheral nerve pathology
- Explain the purpose, indications, contraindications, and limitations of electrodiagnostic testing
- Perform basic nerve conduction studies under the supervision of an electromyographer or EMG tech
Instruction Method
10 weeks – asynchronous online. Tutor will be available online during office hours each week Tuesdays 9am-10am and 8pm-9pm for students to check in, clarify concepts and ask questions or express concerns. After the 10 weeks, a two-week observership at a hospital site will follow either in Toronto, London, Kingston, Hamilton or Ottawa
Admission Requirements
General Health Science Degree (preferred)
Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology
Observership
Those currently working in the area will have special consideration around the length of the observership, and will be assessed on an individual basis.
