POSITION: Chiropodist
STATUS: Temporary Full-Time – Maternity Leave Coverage (75 hours bi-weekly) ending March 31, 2027, or upon the return of the incumbent, whichever occurs first.
This is a temporary position. The successful candidate will have no claim to the position on a permanent basis in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
REPORTING TO: Director, Programs & Services, or their delegate
UNION AFFILIATION: This position is part of the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) bargaining unit and will be subject to the terms and conditions outlined in a collective agreement. Union dues will be applicable as per ONA guidelines.
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a key member of the North York Family Health Team (NYFHT) and an integral part of an interprofessional health care team, the Chiropodist will provide a full range of quality foot care to all NYFHT patients. The range of service includes active treatment of acute pathological foot conditions, surgical procedures, and preventive & palliative foot care.
An ongoing emphasis will be placed on the promotion of foot health. Patients will be encouraged to always participate, within their capabilities, to accept the utmost responsibility for their own care.
The Chiropody Clinic is committed to the highest standards of patient care and is an integral part of academics within the NYFHT. The Chiropodist may be responsible for supervising chiropody students and participating in student education activities in accordance with NYFHT academic partnerships.
The Chiropodist reports to, and is responsible to, the Director, Programs & Services. All clinical decision-making outside the scope of the Chiropodist must be done in consultation with the Executive Director and CEO, NYFHT Medical Director and/or physicians of NYFHT and/or medical directives.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties of the Chiropodist will be divided into two categories: clinical duties and administrative duties. The Chiropodist will be encouraged to operate within their full scope of practice. They will be encouraged to work cooperatively with all members of the health care team in the promotion of patient health and prevention of disease.
CLINICAL DUTIES:
- Provide assessment of foot disorders or dysfunctions and treatment through therapeutic or palliative means
- Differentiating between disorders of the foot arising from systemic or general disease and those arising from local, structural and/or functional disorders
- Recognizing patients having conditions beyond their scope of practice and referring to other appropriate health care professionals (e.g. primary care provider)
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the electronic medical record (experience with Accuro, Ocean and PSS preferred)
- Designing and implementing a plan based on presenting conditions and the patient’s individual needs. The Chiropodist will reinforce and encourage patient responsibility and participation in the plan
- Provide footwear education and/or fit patients for offloading devices if required
- Collaborate with all family health team members to coordinate patient care, including providing education on foot health, disease prevention and self-care in Diabetes Education Program classes
- Ensure proper sterilization of all instruments, ensure regular maintenance and proper documentation of the autoclave
- Adhere to all professional, ethical and infection control standards
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
- Develop quality improvement indicators and prepare quarterly statistics as needed
- Assist in the preparation of quarterly reports and monitor daily statistical data
- Ensures safe working practices and that all clinical equipment is in satisfactory operating condition
- Participates in professional development activities to stay current with best practices and evidence-based approaches in chiropody
- Prepares work schedules that ensure efficient use of time
- Prepares, monitors and controls medical supplies necessary for clinic operation
AUTHORITY:
The Chiropodist does not direct the activities of staff or a function without the direction of the NYFHT decision makers. The Chiropodist must comply with the practice standards used by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario.
DECISION MAKING:
On a regular and continuous basis, the Chiropodist exercises clinical judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the NYFHT.
JOB ENVIRONMENT: Clinical setting within a community-based primary care medical office environment.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduate of an accredited school of chiropody or podiatry
- Active registration in good standing with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario
- Authorized to practice the full scope of chiropody
- Minimum one (1) year of recent experience in community-based chiropody practice.
- Up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based approaches to foot care
- Experience working in primary care, community health or interprofessional teams is an asset
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team-based care model
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Compensation is in accordance with the Collective Agreement and includes participation in the HOOPP pension plan, extended health and dental benefits, paid vacation, and professional development opportunities.
PAY: $70,000.00 – $76,000.00 per year
