About the Course
The AI and Mental Health Care: Practical Opportunities for Clinical and Administrative Implementation course is designed to help participants feel more comfortable engaging with AI technologies, deepen their competence in understanding and assessing its role in mental health and addictions care, and build capacity in applying AI responsibly within clinical and organizational environments.
Participants will explore foundational concepts in AI and machine learning, real-world clinical and administrative use cases, and implementation strategies. The course also addresses key ethical, legal, and equity considerations, all tailored to the realities of mental health and addiction care.
The course is developed by members of the Institute for Education Research (TIER) at University Health Network in collaboration with The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. This course is part of the Scaling for Impact: Responsible AI in Healthcare, supported by the Future Skills Centre (FSC). Content will include pre-readings, virtual live sessions and reflection assignments.

Course Format
This program is one (1) course of four (4) weeks from July 4 – August 5. Each week contains learning objectives, pre-readings and post-session reflections, and a virtual live class session every Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. EST. Learners are encouraged to identify their own learning needs and go beyond the material provided each week through additional resources.

NOTE: This workshop is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by The Michener Institute of Education at UHN – CPD Accreditation Office. You may claim a maximum of 7.5 Section 1 group learning hours (credits are automatically calculated).
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will:
- Understand Foundational Knowledge – Key concepts, terminologies and methodologies in artificial intelligence with a focus on their relevance and adaptation to mental health care contexts
- Analyze Real-World Applications – Examine current AI-driven tools and systems used in mental health assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and administrative support to develop an evidence-based understanding of their practical impact
- Evaluate Barriers and Facilitators – Identify challenges and enablers specific to the integration of AI in mental health services, using case studies to explore change management strategies tailored to diverse clinical and organizational settings
- Apply Social and Ethical Considerations – Critically evaluate ethical concerns, including patient privacy, consent, algorithmic bias, and access equity, within the framework of AI-augmented mental health care delivery
