About the Program

The Long-Term Ventilation Education Certificate Program is designed specifically for Registered Respiratory Therapists (RTs) who care for patients requiring long-term ventilation in hospital and community settings.

Developed in partnership with the Provincial Long-Term Ventilation Strategy and The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, this Ministry of Health-funded course provides participants with a certificate of completion and may qualify for continuing education credits through the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT).
This fully online course is offered at no cost to RTs registered in Ontario.

This practically focused course consists of five short, case-based modules (approximately 100 minutes total), and is structured to deepen RTs’ understanding of:

  • Introduction to Long-Term Ventilation (LTV)
  • Understanding Acute vs. Chronic Care in Long-Term Ventilation
  • LTV Ventilator Initiation and Management
  • LTV Patient Assessment and Monitoring
  • Community Integration and Support for LTV Patients in Ontario

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of long-term ventilation and the RT’s role in caring for this patient population
  • Distinguish between acute and chronic ventilation and understand the implications for RT practice
  • Learn how to transition patients from acute to chronic ventilators effectively
  • Build the skills needed to monitor and support long-term ventilated patients in their care environment
  • Understand how to safely transition LTV patients into the community and navigate available Ontario-based resources
