About the Course

This 16-week hybrid course assists internationally educated medical laboratory technologists to prepare for the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) national licensing examination in Canada. The program will consist of weekly synchronous sessions, online content, including the three mandatory weekend onsite sessions at The Michener Institute, over three weekends for simulated lab experience (mandatory/required).

Outcome

Upon successful completion of the course, the Learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of laboratory safety and risk management methods, including biological, chemical, physical, and psychological hazards, and ensure safe practices in histology lab settings to support accurate specimen preparation
  • Apply knowledge of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) processes in histology, focusing on specimen receiving, grossing, and the troubleshooting of common lab issues to ensure reliable and accurate results
  • Understand the critical steps involved in specimen acquisition, receiving, and grossing, including proper registration, gross description, dissection, and marking techniques like tattooing or India ink, to ensure quality specimen preparation.
  • Explain the principles and practices of fixation, including the selection and application of common fixatives, as well as troubleshooting issues such as poor or delayed fixation, to optimize tissue preservation for examination
  • Describe the processes of tissue processing, including automated processing, decalcification, and troubleshooting common issues, to prepare high-quality specimens for further analysis.
  • Demonstrate proper embedding techniques, including orientation and embedding in paraffin wax, and identify potential issues encountered during embedding to ensure specimens are ready for microtomy
  • Explain the principles and procedures for microtomy and cryotomy, including proper equipment usage, safety protocols, and troubleshooting techniques to ensure smooth sectioning and high-quality tissue samples
  • Perform tissue staining techniques, including H&E and various special stains, and demonstrate proficiency in applying these techniques while identifying troubleshooting issues and adhering to safety protocols to support accurate diagnosis.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in immunohistochemistry (IHC), molecular pathology techniques, and electron microscopy, applying these advanced methods to enhance the diagnostic process and tissue analysis
  • Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for specimen handling, tissue preparation, staining, and troubleshooting, ensuring accuracy and consistency in laboratory results that support pathologist evaluation
