About the Course

This 16-week hybrid course assists internationally educated medical laboratory technologists to prepare for the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) national licensing examination in Canada. The program will consist of weekly synchronous sessions, online content, including the three mandatory weekend onsite sessions at The Michener Institute, over three weekends for simulated lab experience (mandatory/required).

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and adhere to the principles and practices of safety and infection control in the laboratory.
Adhere to the correct procedure for specimen collection, suitability, handling, and transportation.
Prepare and stain clinical specimens for testing.
Methodically analyze and interpret results of Pap testing.
Accurately document and report the results of the analysis of the clinical specimens.
Practice and promote the principles of quality management.
Practice and promote professionalism.

Requirements

Applicants must first register with the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) and go through the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process. The PLA establishes your eligibility to take the CAMLPR National Certification Examinations.

Please Note: Applicants who have active CSMLS PLAs (in transition from CSMLS to CAMLPR), please register with CAMLPR and ensure CSMLS has transferred your CSMLS PLA and supporting documents including ELAs to CAMLPR. CAMLPR will review and send you a CAMLPR review document which you will need to submit with your application to Michener, along with your CSMLS PLA and ELA (completed within the last 2 years).

Applicants must submit:

A valid Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) report from the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) or active CSMLS PLA with review document from CAMLPR.
Meet the English Language requirements by successfully completing one of the assessments in the English Language Assessment Score Requirements table below if English is a second language. English Language Assessments must be completed within the last two years.
The MELA is the preferred English Language Assessment as it is designed for healthcare professionals. Also note that applicants educated outside of Canada will require the MELA (or another English Language Assessment for registration with CMLTO).
Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or Refugee status.

If you are applying to take any of the 5 CAMLPR Bridging courses: Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Transfusion Science (Medicine), Histotechnology (Histology), please indicate which CAMLPR Bridging course you are applying to take. If you are planning on taking more than 1 CAMLPR Bridging course, please check the lab dates listed on each discipline specific course page to ensure there are no overlapping lab dates.

We would suggest students only take 1 CAMLPR Bridging course at one time or at most 2 if the lab dates do not overlap.

Supporting documents are submitted through Michener Self-Service. You will receive an acknowledgment email with your credentials within three business days after your application is submitted. Once you receive an acknowledgement email, you will have the option to choose which CAMLPR Bridging course (s) you want to apply to.
A firm offer of admission may only be given to applicants who have met all the admission criteria and have submitted all required supporting documents by the application deadline.
Seats are limited (22 seats per intake) and offered on first-come, first-qualified, first-accepted basis. All other candidates will be placed on a wait list. Offers will continue to be sent to candidates on the wait list until the course is full. Any applicants remaining on the waitlist are encouraged to apply early for the next intake of the course.
