About the Course
This course is designed to help learn the basics of diabetes and how health professionals and non-health professionals can support persons with diabetes. The course has been updated to meet the Diabetes Canada clinical practice guidelines.
Learners will focus on the basics of diabetes and the proper techniques and methods to provide support to persons with diabetes. Topics covered include:
- Introduction to diabetes
- Psychological aspects of diabetes
- Nutritional aspects of diabetes management
- Exercise & Oral medications for Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes
- Insulin
- Hypoglycemia & Hyperglycemia
- Chronic complications
This course is open to all individuals wishing for a general introduction to diabetes: medical technicians, personal support workers, family members / lay carers of persons with diabetes and other health professionals (including those not registered or licensed with a regulatory body in Canada).
Outcome
Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of diabetes, its development, progression and management throughout the life stages
- Demonstrate effective communication with people with diabetes, their families or support persons, and colleagues
- Demonstrate knowledge of education and behaviour change theories
