About the Profession
MRI technologists play a critical role in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centered care within today’s healthcare system. In addition to operating advanced magnetic resonance imaging equipment, MRI technologists provide a high level of direct patient care, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and understanding throughout the imaging process.
The role involves ongoing patient interaction, clear and compassionate communication, and close collaboration with radiologists and other members of the interprofessional healthcare team. Depending on the clinical setting, responsibilities may also include venipuncture and the administration of contrast agents.
By combining technical expertise with strong clinical judgment and interpersonal skills, MRI technologists support positive patient experiences and contribute to the acquisition of high‑quality diagnostic images.
About the Program
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Graduate Certificate is a comprehensive, learner‑centered program designed for Medical Radiation Imaging Technologists (MRITs) who are currently practicing in imaging disciplines other than MRI.
The program equips imaging professionals with the foundational MRI knowledge, clinical skills, patient care expertise, and professional competence required for safe and effective entry‑level MRI practice. Graduates develop the ability to perform MRI procedures competently while delivering high‑quality, patient‑centered care.
Designed for working healthcare professionals, the program is delivered primarily through an asynchronous, interactive online format, allowing learners to balance their studies with professional responsibilities.
Students are supported by faculty through regular synchronous check‑ins, which focus on academic guidance, progress monitoring, and learner support throughout the program.
Study Pathways
Applicants may choose one of two study pathways at the time of application.
- Three 15‑week didactic courses completed in one semester
- Followed by a 15‑week full‑time clinical placement
- Program duration: approximately 8 months
- Estimated didactic time commitment: ~21 hours per week
- One 15‑week didactic course per semester over three semesters
- Followed by a 15‑week clinical placement
- Program duration: approximately 16–20 months
Depending on course load and clinical scheduling, the program may be completed in approximately 8 to 20 months.
The program prepares graduates to work confidently in the dynamic MRI environment, with a strong emphasis on; MRI physics, Patient safety, Clinical decision‑making and Interprofessional collaboration. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Imaging Professionals is accredited by Accreditation Canada.
Graduates are eligible to write the national certification examination administered by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). Successful certification allows graduates to practice across Canada and apply for registration as an MRI Technologist with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO).
Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide confirmation of support from a clinical placement site. Priority admission may be given to candidates who submit a letter of commitment confirming clinical placement training. Consideration may also be given to applicants from rural and northern Ontario.
The MRI program instructors use first- hand clinical images and simulated software to prepare students for clinical placement.

Clinical education is a core component of the MRI for Imaging Professionals program. It provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a real‑world clinical environment under the supervision of certified MRI technologists.
Students begin a full‑time clinical placement after successfully completing all required didactic coursework. The placement supports the development of hands‑on MRI skills, clinical judgment, and professional confidence, with a strong emphasis on patient care, safety, and best practices in the MRI environment.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide a letter of support from a potential clinical placement site or employer. Priority admission may be given to applicants who submit a letter of commitment confirming clinical placement training by a sponsoring site. Consideration will also be given to applicants from rural and northern Ontario.
The first week of the clinical semester includes mandatory in‑person attendance at the Clinical Readiness Lab at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. This lab is designed to prepare students for venipuncture training.
In certain cases, exemptions from attending the in‑person lab may be approved based on geographic location and the availability of venipuncture training through a sponsored clinical placement site.
The remainder of the first week is delivered online through virtual simulation activities. All students beginning clinical placement are required to participate in first‑week activities, regardless of where they live.
All required health documentation and clinical compliance requirements must be completed and submitted before the start of clinical placement. Only students who have met all requirements will be permitted to proceed into the clinical component of the program.
