Specialized Education for Hospital Partners Across Northern Ontario
The Michener Institute of Education at UHN, in partnership with Ontario’s Ministry of Health, offers postgraduate nursing education designed specifically for hospitals and healthcare organizations in Northern Ontario. These programs strengthen local acute and critical care capacity through practical, job-ready training aligned with current standards of care.
A 14-week accelerated full-time program offered through hospital sponsorship for nurses working in or hired into Emergency Departments. Course delivered in hybrid format:
- Virtual facilitated classroom days
- Online self-study modules
- Clinical shifts (usually but not always the nurses’ hospital unit)
- Michener delivers all didactic learning and oversees/supports clinical learning, hospital sponsors provide clinical facilitator and oversee/support clinical learning
This program meets the hours for funding from Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO).
An 8-week accelerated program offered through hospital sponsorship for nurses working in or hired into Level 2 ICUs. Course delivered in hybrid format:
- Virtual facilitated classroom days
- Online self-study modules
- Clinical shifts (usually but not always the nurses’ hospital unit)
- Michener delivers all didactic learning and oversees/supports clinical learning, hospital sponsors provide clinical facilitator and oversee/support clinical learning
This program meets the hours for funding from Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO).
Heart and Stroke (HSF) Advanced Life Support (ALS) training and recertification courses are tailored for healthcare professionals tasked with responding to cardiopulmonary emergencies and operating in critical care settings.
These courses uphold the highest educational standards, and equip professionals with the skills to effectively and safely manage emergency scenarios through simulation-based, interprofessional and team-focused learning.
A 6-week virtual boot camp with instructor support and feedback, designed for new nursing graduates with little or no professional experience. Virtual simulation experiences, case studies and scenarios will allow learners to apply their learning and decision-making.
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of A&P and pathophysiology to recognize changes in a patient status
- Perform a focused physical assessment, recognizing normal and abnormal findings
- Demonstrate management of a deteriorating patient
- Demonstrate effective communication via documentation and with physicians, nurses, unregulated HCP and patients/families
- Synthesize relevant patient information in escalation of patient concerns to physicians and report to nurses
- Demonstrate safe medication practices
A 6-week virtual, self-study with instructor support course, ending with a full day of simulation experience to reflect a “Day in the life of an ICU Nurse”. Nursing shortages have led hospitals to hire new nursing graduates to work in their ICUs and step-down units. This bootcamp is designed to help these new hires close any educational gap, and better prepare them for success in the accelerated Critical Care or Acute Care programs.
Upon completion, learners will be able to apply knowledge and demonstrate aspects of critical patient care.
An 11-week accelerated full-time program offered through hospital sponsorship for nurses working in or hired into Level 3 ICUs. Course delivered in hybrid format:
- Virtual facilitated classroom days
- Online self-study modules
- Clinical shifts (usually but not always the nurses’ hospital unit)
- Michener delivers all didactic learning and oversees/supports clinical learning, hospital sponsors provide clinical facilitator and oversee/support clinical learning
This program meets the hours for funding from Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO).
The Diabetes Educator Certificate Program is a 24-week online program highly sought after by health professionals interested in supporting patients and families with the management and control of diabetes. Led by Certified Diabetes Educators, this was the first program globally to achieve recognition from the International Diabetes Federation.
This program may help prepare you to write the Canadian Diabetes Educator Certification Board (CDECB) exam, but it is not in any way connected to the CDECB. Find information on certification at www.cdecb.ca.
An 8-week accelerated full-time program offered through hospital sponsorship for nurses working in or hired into Renal Dialysis Units at hospitals or clinics. Course delivered in hybrid format:
- Virtual facilitated classroom days
- Online self-study modules
- Clinical shifts (usually but not always the nurses’ hospital unit)
- Michener delivers all didactic learning and oversees/supports clinical learning, hospital sponsors provide clinical facilitator and oversee/support clinical learning
The curriculum is grounded in concepts and practice standards derived from the Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technologists (CAANT), Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN) and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
This 12-week course will focus on the foundations of nursing care for patients with mental health conditions. This program is intended for:
- Students preparing to write the CNA mental health nursing exam
- Nurses looking to deepen their understanding of best practices in providing well- informed, patient-centered care to patients with mental health needs
This course is available for individual registration as well as hospital sponsorship.
NOTE: This program is only offered on a contract basis with partner hospitals. Admission is not currently open to the public.
A 5-week program offered to nurses performing kidney care in a variety of environments, with an emphasis on Peritoneal Dialysis.
- For RNs/RPNs in outpatient PD, satellite centers, renal and transplant clinics, acute inpatient units, etc.
- Hybrid model combines didactic and self-directed learning modalities alongside a comprehensive clinical practicum in complex and dynamic clinical practice environments

Venipuncture skills are increasingly in demand in health care. This hybrid course is broken into two main parts:
- The theory portion taught virtually (online) – study at your own pace and complete the assignments to be eligible for the workshop
- Practical in-class workshop to practice basic to advanced venipuncture techniques using simulation equipment
This course is intended for anyone working or preparing to work in healthcare, including Medical Laboratory Technologists, Laboratory Technicians and Assistants, Respiratory Therapists, Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses and Emergency Medical Technicians.
