The Michener Centre for Post-Graduate Nursing Education provides a number of highly sought-after certificate and boot camp programs. Organizations can support individuals or groups of nurses with an opportunity to advance their knowledge and develop specialized skills to practice confidently and safely in hospitals and the community. This includes certificate programs and courses in areas such as: Critical Care Nursing, Acute Care Nursing, Pediatric Physical Assessment, Adult Physical Assessment and more.

Currently Offered Nursing Programs, Certificates, Courses

Course Highlights:

  1. Offered thru hospital sponsorship for nurses working in or hired into Level 2 ICUs
  2. 8-week accelerated program
  3. Hybrid model- virtual facilitated classroom days, online self-study modules and clinical shifts (usually but not always at the nurses’ hospital unit)
  4. Partnership model with hospitals as Michener delivers all didactic and oversees/supports the clinical learning. Hospital provides a clinical facilitator (hospital employee) to mentor the learners in the unit and oversee/support their clinical learning.
  5. Program meets the hours for funding from the CCSO

Workshop Highlights

  • Heart and Stroke (HSF) Advanced Life Support (ALS) training and recertification courses tailored for healthcare professionals tasked with responding to cardiopulmonary emergencies and operating in critical care settings.
  • These courses uphold the highest educational standards, equipping professionals with the skills to effectively and safely manage emergency scenarios through simulation-based, interprofessional, and team-focused learning.

Course Highlights:

  1. 6-week online, self-study with instructor support course and ending with full day of simulation experience (simulation to reflect “Day in the life of an ICU Nurse”) at Michener.
  2. Boot Camp was developed in response to hospital feedback. Due to the nursing shortage Hospitals have moved to hiring new nursing graduates to work in their ICUs and step-down units. This change in HR hiring model (previously 2-3 years professional nursing practice with emphasis on experience with high acuity patients as asset) has highlighted an educational gap. The Boot Camp goal is to close the gap and better prepare new nursing graduates to be successful in the accelerated Critical Care or Acute Care program.
  3. Nurses upon completion of the Boot Camp will be able to:
    • Demonstrate how to organize at the beginning of a clinical shift
    • Apply knowledge of A & P and pharmacology to summarize their patient’s admitting diagnosis and course of hospital care
    • Interpret foundational cardiac rhythms, identify significance and select appropriate interventions
    • Perform a focused physical assessment, recognizing normal and abnormal findings
    • Formulate a care plan including nursing priorities for a high-acuity patient
    • Synthesize relevant patient information to provide a nursing report

  • 11-week accelerated full-time program
  • Hybrid model – virtual facilitated classroom days, online self-study modules and clinical shifts (usually but not always at the nurses’ hospital unit)
  • Partnership model with hospitals as Michener delivers all didactic and oversees/supports the clinical learning. Hospital provides a clinical facilitator (hospital employee) to mentor the learners in the unit and oversee/support their clinical learning.

  • Self-study with weekly facilitator led discussions
  • Diabetes Educator Certificate Program is highly sought after by health professionals interested in supporting patients and families with the management and control of diabetes
  • May help prepare learners to write the CDECB exam
  • Available for individual registration and sponsorship

  • 8-week accelerated full-time program
  • Hybrid model- virtual facilitated classroom days, online self-study modules and clinical shifts (usually but not always at the nurses’ hospital unit)
  • Partnership model with hospitals as Michener delivers all didactic and oversees/supports the clinical learning. Hospital provides a clinical facilitator (hospital employee) to mentor the learners in the unit and oversee/support their clinical learning.

  • 10-week online self-study with weekly facilitated discussions/case studies
  • Focus on the foundations of nursing care for patients with mental health conditions
  • Aim to prepare students for the CNA mental health nursing exam and for providing well- informed, patient-centered nursing care to patients with mental health needs.
  • Available thru hospital sponsorship and individual registration

Course Highlights

  • Flexible Online Learning: Study venipuncture procedures, safety protocols, and specimen handling at your own pace.
  • Hands-On Training: Engage in a practical workshop to practice venipuncture techniques with simulation equipment, focusing on patient comfort and accuracy.
  • Specialized Techniques: Learn venipuncture methods for pediatric and geriatric patients, while enhancing interpersonal skills and mastering various collection techniques.

  • 4-week accelerated program for nurses training or providing support to clients undergoing dialysis at home
  • Hybrid model
  • Michener provides didactic, partners with hospitals, clinics, Home and Community Care Services

Course Highlights

  • 6-week online with instructor support and feedback
  • Course for new nursing graduates with little or no professional experience
  • Virtual simulation experiences, case studies and branching scenarios that allow learners to apply their learning and make decisions
  • Nurses upon completion of the course will be able to:
    1. Apply knowledge of A&P and pathophysiology to recognize changes in a patient status
    2. Performing a focused physical assessment, recognizing normal and abnormal findings
    3. Demonstrate management of a deteriorating patient
    4. Demonstrate effective communication via documentation and with physicians, nurses, unregulated HCP and patients/families
    5. Synthesize relevant patient information in escalation of patient concerns to physicians and report to nurses
    6. Demonstrated safe medication practices
