Organizational Scope
The policy applies to all full-time and part-time students in programs* offered in The Michener Institute of Education at UHN (“Michener”).
*Students in joint programs must refer to their program handbook.
Purpose
Michener believes that a student will make reasonable and informed decisions regarding their attendance in scheduled sessions. Attendance in all lectures, laboratories, simulation sessions and clinical is critical in achieving the entry to practice competencies required of a health care professional
Policy
Attendance
Attendance in all laboratories, simulation and clinical sessions is mandatory. Course outlines will identify any other specific attendance requirements in the syllabus. Students are expected to be present and on time for all scheduled laboratories, simulation or clinical sessions.
Failure to attend scheduled laboratories, simulation or clinical sessions may result in a loss of marks and / or a failing grade for a course If a student will be late or absent for a laboratory, simulation or clinical session due to exceptional circumstances, they must notify program faculty as soon as possible and may be asked to provide documentation to support the absence.
Absence for a Prolonged Period of Time
Students anticipating, they may need an extended period of absence due to unavoidable cause should consult with the program Academic Chair and refer to the:
- Leave of Absence Policy or
- Withdrawal Policy
- For students absent for more than 3 weeks, programs are advised to notify the Registrar’s Office who will try to contact the student. If no contact is made, the student may be withdrawn from the program
Missed Compulsory Evaluations
Students are expected to be present and on time for scheduled assessments/evaluations. Students who are late for an assessment may be refused entry. (please refer to the Examination Invigilation Policy) Absence from an evaluation may result in a mark of zero for that evaluation, and if required to pass the course, may result in a course failure. If a student will be late or absent for compulsory evaluation due to exceptional circumstances, they must notify program faculty as soon as possible and may be asked to provide documentation to support the absence.
A faculty member and / or Academic Chair may grant a deferral or alternative evaluation in exceptional circumstances with sufficient notice and documentation is provided. The date for alternative evaluation may be determined through consultation with faculty, health services, accessibility and the students on a case-by-case basis If the missed evaluation is a final exam, the supplemental exam period immediately following the semester in which the absence occurred.
