AC-OCE-POL-006 Clinical Placement Policy | |
---|---|
Creation Date | September 1, 2010 |
Approval Date | June 28, 2018 |
Effective Date | September 4, 2018 |
Organizational Scope
The Policy applies to students assigned clinical placements by The Michener Institute of Education at UHN (“Michener”) as required.
Purpose
The clinical placement policy outlines:
- the students’ pre-clinical and clinical responsibilities;
- Michener’s commitments for establishing and assigning student clinical placements to meet the educational requirements of the programs.
Policy
Students
Michener’s student health and other pre-clinical requirements must be completed and uploaded to the designated portal no later than the published deadline date.
Failure to adhere to published deadline dates/requirements will result in Academic Standing Penalty which may impact the student’s ability to progress in the program. Each clinical site has its own set of rules and regulations relating to staff responsibilities and functions. Students are required to become familiar with and adhere to these regulations in addition to Michener Policy and Procedures.
Clinical placement sites are chosen to best meet the competency requirements for each program.
Students have agreed at the point of application and/or supplemental application and upon acceptance into their respective programs to to attend any placement site that is assigned to them knowing that sites may be located anywhere in Ontario and for some programs across Canada.
It is a professional expectation that students must declare any potential conflict of interest that may exist for them at any clinical site. A conflict of interest is defined as, but not limited to, a family member or close friend of the student who has the potential of supervising and/or evaluating that student or who may have influence on the student’s placement or progression in the clinical phase of the program.
Michener
To ensure the clinical education requirements are met for each program, the Office for Clinical Education will confirm sufficient clinical placements to accommodate the number of students in each program. Clinical site availability is reviewed annually and is subject to change based on the number of students requiring placements and individual clinical site circumstances.
Students will not be placed at a clinical site where a confirmed conflict of interest exists or cannot be resolved.
Barring any exceptional circumstance or force majeure, the Office for Clinical Education aims to notify students of the location of their clinical placement three months prior to the start of their placements.
The Clinical Placement Procedure provides more information on the assignment of clinical placements.
