Purpose

The Honorary Diploma recognizes and honors exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions in health care and/or post-secondary education, whose accomplishments provide inspiration and leadership to the graduates, and who, by their presence, bring distinction to the Michener Institute of Education at UHN (Michener) and the University Health Network (UHN).

Definitions

Full Time and Part Time Employees (employees) – Any individual employed by the Michener Institute of Education at UHN (Michener) or University Health Network (UHN).

Policy

  1. The recipient of the Honorary Diploma meets one or more of the following criteria:
    • Significant contributions and accomplishments in the field of health care (broadly defined) provincially, nationally or internationally
    • Significant contributions and accomplishments in post-secondary education provincially, nationally or internationally
    • Significant contributions and accomplishments in a professional discipline that aligns with The Michener Institute of Education at UHN’s educational programs.
    • Significant contributions and accomplishments in a community of professional practice that aligns with The Michener Institute of Education at UHN’s educational programs.
  2. Recipients may include members of the public, former employees, former Michener and University Health Network Board of Governors (Governors), public officials, and alumni and former employees. Normally, potential recipients have been away from active service or membership for several years to be eligible.
  3. The Michener Board of Governors may award an Honorary Diploma every year or every other academic year.
  4. The recipient usually attends convocation or another event at which the diploma is awarded.
  5. The Office responsible will be the Principal’s Office.

Revocation of an Honorary Diploma

  1. The Michener Board of Governors may revoke an Honorary Diploma.
  2. Revocation shall be based on evidence and guided by the principle of fairness.
  3. The Michener Board of Governors shall consider revoking an Honorary Diploma if the recipient:
    • Has been convicted of a criminal offence;
    • Obtained the Honorary Diploma by fraud, deception, or other inappropriate means;
    • Engaged in disreputable conduct that is a significant departure from generally recognized standards of public behaviour and that would undermine the credibility or integrity of Michener or
    • Has been removed for misconduct from any official roll of members of a regulated profession to which they belong.
