About the Course

This 16-week hybrid course assists internationally educated medical laboratory technologists to prepare for the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) national licensing examination in Canada. The program will consist of weekly synchronous sessions, online content, including the three mandatory weekend onsite sessions at The Michener Institute, over three weekends for simulated lab experience (mandatory/required).

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the foundational principles of molecular biology including DNA/RNA structure, replication, transcription, and translation as they relate to diagnostic testing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of specimen handling and nucleic acid extraction techniques, ensuring sample integrity and compliance with pre-analytical requirements.
  • Apply principles of PCR and advanced amplification methods (e.g., real-time PCR, digital PCR) to detect and quantify genetic material accurately.
  • Differentiate hybridization-based techniques from amplification-based methods and describe their diagnostic applications, including FISH, MLPA, and microarrays.
  • Describe sequencing methodologies such as Sanger and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and explain their role in clinical diagnostics.
  • Interpret molecular diagnostic results for genetic disorders, infectious diseases, and oncology, integrating clinical context and laboratory data.
  • Operate and maintain molecular laboratory equipment including thermocyclers, electrophoresis systems, and real-time PCR instruments, following manufacturer and safety guidelines.
  • Apply quality assurance and quality control principles to molecular testing workflows, including troubleshooting and documentation for compliance and accuracy.
  • Communicate molecular diagnostic findings effectively, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to patient confidentiality and professional standards.
  • Implement laboratory safety protocols including WHMIS, PPE use, spill management, and ergonomic practices to minimize risk and maintain a safe work environment.
