  • Summarize the methods in which microbes are identified
  • Describe the medical syndromes caused by different types of pathogens
  • Explain the significance of antibiotic organisms in health care settings
  • Outline the different types of infectious healthcare-acquired conditions
  • Define the concepts of incidence and prevalence and how they are used to define healthcare acquired infection frequency
  • Define a surveillance program for healthcare acquired infections and describe the tools used to implement a surveillance program
  • Define elements of routine practices
  • Describe the spectrum of transmission and the modes of transmission of infectious organisms
  • Define relevant concepts including period of incubation, period of infectivity, nosocomial infection.
  • Recognize how to confirm existence of an outbreak and identify key components in an outbreak investigation
  • Describe various methods of control measures
  • Describe the nine components of an occupational health program
  • Identify aspects of infectious disease surveillance and control at a community level setting
  • Define relationship between infection prevention & control and public health
  • Describe components of pandemic response & communication
  • Define the three components of the Spaulding Classification System
  • Assess educational needs and create learning plans with measurable objectives to fulfill identified needs.
  • Learn how to conduct an organizational infection control risk assessment
  • Collaborate with other departments to identify, review and make recommendations for gaps in practice and adverse/sentinel events.

Evaluation Method

There will 3 multiple choice tests worth 25%, 25%, and 50% of the grade. The first two exams will cover the first third and second thirds of the course content. The last exam will cover the entire course, focusing on the last third of the content

Intended For

The course is intended for those who are currently working in infection control or desire to enter the field. The course is designed to prepare students to work in the field of infection control as infection control professionals.

Text Book

There are no required textbooks. A recommended reference, for additional information, would be the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology Text.

Prerequisites

Completion of a Bachelors of Science degree program, in one of the following fields: Nursing, Health or Allied Health Sciences, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, and/or Microbiology or recognized equivalent; OR equivalent work experience in a related field to healthcare.
