Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Demonstrate therapeutic communication with patients.
- Complete a suicide risk assessment and a mental health status assessment for a patient.
- Explain the symptoms and treatment for patients at risk of suicide and/or with mental health conditions.
- Apply best practices in healthcare to nursing care plan for patients at risk of suicide and/or with mental health conditions.
- Recognize personal/societal biases and misconceptions about mental health conditions that affect patient well-being when they come up in patient-care conversations.
Course Objectives
This 12-week course will focus on the foundations of nursing care for patients with mental health conditions. We aim to prepare students for the CNA mental health nursing exam and for providing well- informed, patient-centered nursing care to patients with mental health needs.
