Learner Outcomes

This course is designed for medical radiation technologists (MRTs) who want to deepen
their understanding of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT).
The course covers the imaging system, radiation physics of positron detection,
instrumentation, and quality control procedures. It builds on the MRT’s foundational
knowledge of radiation emission and detection. It explores the fundamental aspects of
PET instrumentation and hybrid imaging of radiopharmaceuticals required by
technologists working in diagnostic imaging. By the end of the course, learners will
better understand important technical concepts in instrumentation aspects of PET/CT
and common radiopharmaceuticals used in imaging with PET/CT, ultimately aiming to
improve the technical quality of imaging studies and enhance patient care quality.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, the Learner will be able to:

  • Describe the instrumentation components of PET imaging systems and their
strengths and limitations on image quality.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental concepts relating to PET/CT and hybrid imaging instrumentation and techniques.
  • Discuss the quality control procedures for the PET/CT scanners.
  • Identify common technical artifacts and limitations of the PET/CT imaging system.
  • Employ best practices for PET/CT radiation safety for patients and technologists within the CNSC’s regulatory requirements.
  • Describe the special shielding considerations for PET imaging in hybrid imaging systems (i.e. CT and MRI). Review the different isotopes and commonly used radiopharmaceuticals in PET imaging.
