This page provides the recommended minimum technology requirements in order for students to remotely access and utilize Michener’s core* online learning tools, student Self-Service and productivity software.
*Core online learning tools and services currently include:
- Blackboard (Michener’s Learning Management System)
- Online collaborative/webinar platforms (e.g. Zoom)
- Self-Service (Admissions, Registration, Health Requirements)
- Microsoft Office Suite of Applications (productivity software available free to Michener Students)
Note: Some programs may require additional technology requirements to support discipline specific activities/course work.
For MRS and DHDA students, please refer to the MRS and DHDA minimum technology requirements below.
Minimum Technology Requirements
Michener has identified the following minimum technology requirements for students to be able to access core online learning tools and services (Note: These specifications are current at the time of publication and will be updated as required.)
Requirement | Windows-based PC | Apple Mac/macOS-based PC |
Operating System1 |
Windows 10 Versions*: 1809, 1903, 1909 |

RAM/Memory | 4 GB | 4 GB |
Storage | 5 GB of available space | 5 GB of available space |
Screen Resolution | 1600 x 900 | 1600 x 900 |
Connectivity | Ethernet or WiFi; available USB port(s) to accommodate recommended accessories | Ethernet or WiFi; available USB port(s) to accommodate recommended accessories |
* We recommend “currently supported” versions of Windows 10 and macOS
1Michener does NOT recommend the use of Chromebooks, tablet devices or smartphones as an alternative to either a Windows-based or macOS-based PC. Chromebooks, tablet devices or smartphones do not currently support the full functionality of Michener’s core online learning tools or services.
To check that your version of Window 10 is supported, please visit: support.microsoft
Apple does not have an official lifecycle document, but they typically support the most recent three macOS versions with security updates. The latest Apple security and software updates can be found at support.apple
MRS & DHDA Minimum Technology Requirements
In order to support discipline-specific activities / course work, students must have dedicated access to a PC with a Windows operating system (OS) that meets identified minimum technology requirements. Please refer to the section above for minimum requirements for a Windows-based PC
All non-Windows based devices such as:
- Apple macOS devices (e.g. Macbooks, iMacs)
- Apple iOS devices (e.g. iPad, iPhone, iPod touch)
- Android devices (e.g. Samsung, Google, LG phones & tablets)
- ChromeOS devices (e.g. Chromebooks & Chrometops)
are not recommended and cannot be supported, as they do not currently support MRS and DHDA Program discipline-specific tools.
Recommended Accessories
Speakers, Microphone or Headphones, Video Camera (webcam)
Many Michener courses will have synchronous (live) online lectures, tutorials, meetings and other activities. While many PCs are equipped with embedded speakers and a microphone, using a headphone with an attached microphone is recommended as it offers improved sound quality and reduces the capture of unwanted background noise. It should be noted that while most laptop PCs are equipped with an embedded video camera (webcam), some laptop PCs and most desktop PCs may require a separate compatible USB video camera (webcam).
Scanner or Camera
Students may be required to provide a visual record of physical work completed or to produce images in support of course activities. A compatible scanner or camera maybe needed. However, a mobile device equipped with a camera maybe sufficient.
Internet Connectivity
High speed broadband access (LAN, Cable or DSL) with a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps is strongly recommended. It is also recommended that students use a wired connection (ethernet) to their home router rather than WiFi connectivity as it is more reliable.
If broadband connectivity is not available, tethering to a mobile device such as smartphone with a strong signal and a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps is an option, although not recommended. Internet connectivity through a tethered mobile device will likely not be sufficient for online video collaboration due to network latency and the unreliable nature of cellular access.
Data Plan Allowances
Participation in online learning activities may cause you to exceed your monthly data plan limit and could result in significant costs due to overage charges. It is highly recommended that students subscribe to an unlimited data plan if it is available from their internet service provider.
