Dr. Diana Michener Schatz Scholarship

Established in 1996 in honour of Dr. Diana Michener Schatz, founder and former President of The Michener Institute, this award is presented to a student who has undertaken a career transition while achieving academic excellence, exemplifying innovative thinking in their chosen applied health profession and contributing to the betterment of the Michener community.

Criteria 1: Following a career transition, individual has chosen to devote themselves to a new applied health profession.

Criteria 2: Demonstrates innovative thinking – the ability to look beyond the obvious, to be creative and imaginative and who endeavours to combine their innovation with their knowledge in practical application to their chosen applied health profession, (as demonstrated through their academic semesters or through the simulated clinical semester).

Criteria 3: Enhances Michener’s community and student life by engaging in activities and initiatives that contribute to the betterment of Michener’s community of practice through volunteer work.

Application Requirements: An essay (500 words max) describing career transition and the opportunity/desire to pursue a career in applied health sciences. Evidence of employment in a previous career (i.e. letter of employment from former employer; licensure with previous regulatory college or association; etc.).

Nomination/Reference Requirements: Two letters of support: From a faculty member who vouches for the student’s qualifications as a scholar and innovative thinker within their chosen applied health profession and from a Michener administrative staff member who validates the student’s contributions to student life and the Michener community, either through student council (and supporting committees), consistent volunteerism at 3-5 Michener events (Graduation; MMI; Orientation; Campus Day/recruitment events etc.), or other student-led events or committees.

**Michener established various endowed Awards through generous donor contributions that were matched by the provincial government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The income generated from these endowments is used to support Awards for Michener students who are Canadian citizens (or permanent residents or protected persons), who are residents of Ontario (student has lived in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months up to the beginning of full-time post-secondary study).
